NIOSH investigations
Is anyone familiar with NIOSH and how they do investigations related to mold contamination?

NIOSH does not perform investigations, they set standards (so may do research in support of such standards).

There are no NIOSH standards for mold.

The above links to a New York City Department of Health guidelines on assessment and remediation of mold.

Basically, visual assessment and musty odor are the ways to investigate...

As mentioned, there are no standards for mold, unlike asbestos and lead.

There are a handful of accepted protocols out there for mold remediation, but their impacts will vary from region to region (climate) and even state to state due to different laws within states.

Generally the first steps are to consult with an Industrial Hygienist, or the likes, have some samples collected, analyzed and compared to the outdoor environment. For health concerns, consult with your physician.

What's your underlying reason for wanting to know? Will help guide any further discussion.
