https://townhall.com/tipsheet/...gun-package-n2538536 With Virginia on the verge of becoming a full-blown blue state, Democratic Governor Ralph Northam is readying a new anti-gun package. It’s more than likely to fail on its first legislative push, but with the Republican majorities in Richmond razor-thin, it wouldn’t be shocking if it passed when the Democrats retake the state legislature in the next election cycle. Northam is merely laying the groundwork. The GOP finally caved on Medicaid expansion this year. Northam can’t run for re-election. The political climate favors Democrats at the moment, so why not go for broke on an issue that has long been taboo in pro-gun Virginia. Northam wants to expand background checks, re-impose the one-gun a month rule, and ban so-called assault weapons. On the latter, that would be any firearm that has a magazine that holds ten-rounds or more (via WaPo): Flanked by fellow Democrats from the House of Delegates and state Senate, Northam rolled out a package of bills Friday that would require universal background checks for firearms purchases, ban assault weapons and resurrect individuals’ purchase limits to one handgun per month, among other proposals. […] They include: • The “Extreme Risk Protective Order,” sponsored by Del. Richard C. “Rip” Sullivan Jr. (D-Fairfax) and Sen. George L. Barker (D-Alexandria), which would allow a court to temporarily prohibit someone from access to his firearms if the person has been found to pose a danger to himself or others. In response to concerns raised by Republicans last year that such power could be misused, the proposal specifies that any removal order would have to be brought by law enforcement and approved by a judge or magistrate. • A bill requiring background checks on all gun sales, including private sales at gun shows or online. The measure is sponsored by Del. Kenneth R. Plum (D-Fairfax) and Sen. L. Louise Lucas (D-Portsmouth). • A revival of Virginia’s one-handgun-a-month law, which had been in effect for nearly 20 years when it was repealed in 2012. Sponsored by Del. Jeion A. Ward (D-Hampton) and Sen. Mamie E. Locke (D-Hampton), the measure would “prevent people from stockpiling firearms and transporting them for sale in other states,” Northam’s office said. […] Del. Kathy Tran (D-Fairfax) and Sen. Adam P. Ebbin (D-Alexandria) are also sponsoring a ban on assault weapons, defining them as any firearm with a magazine that holds more than 10 rounds of ammunition. I wish I could say hold the line here, but I’m not going to lie—some version of these laws are going to be enacted. Again, it might not be on the initial attempt, but in the near future, Virginia could have gun laws similar to that of Maryland or New Jersey. If not under Northam’s tenure as governor, then definitely under anti-gunner Mark Herring, who is the current state attorney general, who plans to run for governor in 2021. He was the man who tried to mess with Virginia’s concealed carry reciprocity agreements; McAuliffe and the legislature came up with a deal that was pretty solid. It made Virginia one of the best states in terms of honoring others’ carry permits. The Virginia Civil Defense League, a staunch state-based pro-gun rights group, lauded the agreement when it was signed at the time. Those days are long gone. The anti-gun Left’s persistent campaign in this state seems to be on the verge of paying off. _________________________ "Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on or by imbeciles who really mean it." Hate to say it, but bit by bit we are losing the battle. Drats have a plan, yet we are not fighting hard enough. It's distressing, to say the least. _________________________________________________ "Once abolish the God, and the Government becomes the God." --- G.K. Chesterton

Its way past time for a 2A challenge to reach SCOTUS, and for SCOTUS to finally fully define what the 2A means. Until "..shall not be infringed" is finally confirmed by SCOTUS to be exactly what it says, all this leftist BS will continue. SCOTUS could and should put an end to this once and for all. But remember, leftists believe they don't have to adhere to any law they disagree with. Maybe we should consider doing the same thing. ----------------------------- Guns are awesome because they shoot solid lead freedom. Every man should have several guns. A 2A challenge to SCOTUS is meaningless. Many states and jurisdictions ignore Heller every day, a new ruling would be no different. The day is coming that this will turn into a shooting war. There is no other option. The left is turning harder left and is open about no longer wanting to get along. Despite the fact that the media tells us otherwise, there are way more of us than them. That many people won't become subjects without a fight. Many people go along with the left because of single emotional issues. Only a small percentage are rabid.

When nothing changes and the 757 remains a virtual war zone in some areas with nightly shootings they will push for more gun control which will of course accomplish nothing. Criminals don’t care about laws. It pains me to see Virginia, a state steeped in liberty and rich in history move in this direction. I used to love Virginia, it was where I grew up and being in a military family that moved every few years it was the only place I ever considered home. Every year my love of Virginia dissipates. It truly pains me to see what is happening to the Old Dominion. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The price of liberty and even of common humanity is eternal vigilance

Unfortunately this is probably true. My family has been in Virginia since before the Revolution. We won't be subjects with out a fight. The rabid socialists now infecting the state, and NOVA in particular, are ignorant of history and human nature. They will not back off and may well reap what they sow. ____________________________ "It is easier to fool someone than to convince them they have been fooled." Please don't take this too personally: While I understand your position on getting out, I'd like to think that more people would stay in VA and vote the jerks out. Running just makes them believe even harder that they can take over. Let's not let the brats, whiners, and jerk politicians have their way.
Please let this be true, and may we be strong and resolute in our effort to not be overtaken. God bless America.

A lot of the demographic changing in VA seems to have been brought on by the flood of Democrats coming into NoVA during the Obama administration. Is the Trump era going to reverse that. A lot of government employees have left, and he hasn't been hiring to replace them. Is anyone seeing a shift back?

I don't know if NOVA is shifting back, but in the nearby town, the shift is still going left. So far, my county is still about 2/3 conservative. Several election cycles ago the Dillon company urged its customers to “vote like a gun owner.” Unfortunately we’ve had ample proof time and again that far too many gun owners don’t vote that way—if they vote at all. As a consequence every time the Democrats have gained a legislative edge they try pushing things a bit further. (I have to laugh in bitter recollection whenever I think of the confident predictions being made not too long ago that “gun control is poison and no one is going to push it any more.”) And part of the reason gun owners don’t vote that way? Because they’re told time and again by other gun owners that none of that stuff is going anywhere and that anyone, such as the NRA, who claims otherwise is a panicky Chicken Little. I’ve seen exactly the same people say that right up until they can no longer ignore the obvious truth and suddenly swing the other way. The sky—or a substantial part of it anyway—has in fact fallen on many gun owners around the country, and the California experience is only one of the worst. If all the gun owners in Colorado had voted like gun owners, we would have swept the legislatures clean and wouldn’t have our current magazine restrictions and wouldn’t be faced with even more draconian laws coming down the pike. But they didn’t, and there’s no reason to believe that things will not continue to worsen. And for everyone else who believes nothing similar can happen where they live, I can only hope you’re right. But I wouldn’t bet the house on it. ► 6.4/93.6 ___________ “We are Americans …. Too old to run, too mean to quit! |
And certainly not the state where we lived for nearly a year at Ft. Carson back in 1960-61! I decided that I needed a rifle with which to hunt deer. Went to a small shop up in Ute pass where we had stopped a few times for coffee and some really good donuts. The owner had a small selection of new guns, mostly rifles, for sale. Decided to invest in a meat procurement plan and bought a Winchester '06 bolt action rifle. Why 30-06? Because I could get free ammo. The point being, I just told the shop owner I wanted to buy it, handed him the money and walked out with it. No phone calls, no BS at all. Still have that rifle. I have long since put a 4X scope on it. Elk There has never been an occasion where a people gave up their weapons in the interest of peace that didn't end in their massacre.
