I hope it is issued as an order.. One question for our Navy and CG guys. What is the SOP distance to maintain between a Navy warship and other foreign vessels while under way? I was on the CGC Bear in 99 when we went to the Mediterranean Sea and we got folded into some Navy operation to include sailing into the Aegean Sea (east of the boot of Italy) to support the US involvement in The NATO bombing of Yugoslavia. When we chopped into the area there were already French, Italians, Greek, and Someother countries ships all in there. We were all assigned to different “boxes” of ocean...we had to stay out of some at night due to tomahawk flight plans and the things fly ten feet over the water until they hit shore and they flew nap of the earth until they find their targets. So we had six boxes that were ours and it covered several square miles each.. but we and all the other warships in the area broadcast an exclusive zone of one mile.... All the warships had an IFF just like in planes but there were hundreds of fishing boats out trying to make a living...and gawkers.... It was a nightmare because two of our boxes had shoreline and we were constantly being approached by small boats. We would shoot flares at them to ward them off. As well making radio broadcast to stand off of all warships by a mile... It only took two days before the local fishermen figured it out..they left us alone and we didn’t bother them. ———————— Each AOR (area of responsibility) has its own special problems or restrictions. Before we chopped into the AOR we were all given SOPs and ROEs...we couldn’t shoot unless we were fired on or if a fast small boat came w/I 1/2 NM, had been fired at with a flare and then we could engage with 50s. ———— I was never in PATFORSWA (Patrol Forces South West Asia), the area around the Persian Sea. But there are already Cutters there and they have their own ROEs....I’m sure someone right now is wondering why those fastboats were allowed so closely to our Navy and CG cutters....
