It was around 8 years old. No picture at all, just audio. I bought two 42" LG TV's at that time, and gave one to GF which was the one I was using. My TV crapped out around two years ago. I took it apart and found most parts were made in China. No surprise here.

So, my question is:

Who makes a reliable flat screen TV that uses quality parts?

So I'm just guessing from your sample of one that LG is out, eh?

Anything can break - Sony and Samsung don't have a huge market share for nothing.

I’ve had Samsung for the past 14 years. Our TV in the living room stopped working at the beginning of COVID. It was a capacitor that went bad that I replaced, but I ended up buying a new one (QLED)and putting the old one in my basement. We have an identical, but smaller version of the one we replaced in our bedroom. Can’t complain about any of the 3. They’ve held up well. I would like to replace the one on our bedroom, but only to have SmartTV functionality. If I do, it’ll be a Samsung. Costco seems to have pretty decent prices on theirs.

In 1968 my first TV was a Zenith 17" that had audio problems from the start which were eventually corrected. As I remember it cost $400. I don't remember how long it lasted or how many repairs it required but it was nothing to brag about. When you look at how inexpensive today's big TV's are and consider the increase in wages for the average American, new TV's are a real bargain. I remember my late father taking out the tubes every few months and going to the machine at Walgreens to find out which one had gone bad. It took hours to do. my Sony is 20 years old and my Samsung is 12 years old. Nothing has ever been done to either one.

Our 65" Samsung Series 8 has developed a hotspot at the bottom of the screen, almost exactly in the center.
Minor right now, hoping it doesn't spread or get worse.

Well, we bought a 50” Vizio, back around 2007 I think it was. Still going strong, knock on wood. And we got it on a discount as it was a customer return. Decided to get another 50” Vizio for the bedroom, got that one around 2016/17 or so I think. The picture on the newer one is even sharper and clearer too. And it was on sale for $500.

Just because the tv might claim to be made in the United States by a US Company i would be willing to bet good money that most if not a greater number of parts were made outside of the United States in other countries..... Just like so many other products that we use every day that are no longer fully American made. ...................................... drill sgt.

Same thing happened to one of our Samsung TVs. Audio but no picture.

I did some searching and found a suggestion to switch the cable to the 2nd HDMI port and change the settings to HDMI2. Sure enough, it worked.

We got a surge, or something, a few years ago. Fried the component inputs on our old 42" Samsung dumb-TV.
Switched to HDMI & all was well, luckily.

I've had very good luck with both Sony and Samsung TVs (Knock on wood). I still own every flat panel TV I've ever bought and use them all fairly regularly and they all still work as they should. I only have one that's not one of those two and it's a Panasonic plasma.

As I upgrade TVs for my living room I move the old ones into other rooms in the house. Every room in my house has a TV except the bathrooms. Just to show they're still being used and work and not just sitting in storage somewhere.

I have had good luck with Samsung. I just upgraded from a 55” to 65” back in March. The old Samsung is still working well, I gave it to my daughter for her apartment. This is the TV I bought

Few years ago our Samsung wouldn't come alive. Laid it down and took the back off. Found a couple bulging capacitors. Went and bought a bag of caps at a local electronics store. Replaced two bulging capacitors and it's been working fine ever since.

I just lost 2 LGs with no power. Always had luck with Sony so I went with a Sony 65 inch. Great picture.

We have had 4 Vizio TVs in the past 12 years and they have all served us well. Sold the smaller one that I got in 2011. Didn't need it and didn't want to move it.

We still have our 55" we bought in 2014, wife watches that one. One was a Christmas gift to my MIL back in 2017 and she still uses it daily.

Found that Sam's Club seemed to have pretty good prices as that's where we got all of ours from. I would definitely buy Vizio again.

Gene, you were (likely still are) a baller! $400 back in '68 is about $3,500 today

They are all a disposable accessory. Anything more than 7 yrs is doing good

Sony or LG. Whichever has a better picture to you

Have both Samsung and LG, the Samsung is easier to connect to for streaming from the phone, both have good pictures, LG lives in the garage in FL heat.

To be forthcoming, we also have a couple of Hisense one in the guest room one on the patio, the patio is a 55 and it has a great picture, built in ROKU and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another, for the $400 to $500 price range depending on size, they are quite the bargain.

Now if it's the main tv and you value super high quality picture and don't mind spending more, go OLED and hit Costco, best tv deals, extended warranty included, all kinds of options.

My old 27" Sony Trinitron CRT is still working, just like new.

I think I'll have it for life, as it's too heavy for me to move.

I've been reasonably happy with Vizio.

I think Sony and Samsung may be a little more up-scale and high-tech but more expensive.

They are all going to be Chinese or made somewhere in southeast Asia. Don't think otherwise.

We had such great luck with the older CRT Toshiba televisions over many years that I bought our first and only flat screen Toshibas about 12 years ago. They have been absolutely trouble free.

I noticed that both 42" LG TV's that I bought round 8 years ago had LEDs for back lighting. That, I'm told is old technology.

Of course, that is why both LG TVs went kaput. A few LEDs burned out and these LEDs are made in China, I noticed when I opened up one set.

I'm leaning toward Samsung and Sony and what pricing COSTCO has to offer on these units.

Meanwhile, no TV in my house. Maybe a good thing?
