I’m talking about renting a storage locker from one of those places that have like 200 units with the roll up doors and then legally reside there?

Florida Statutes 83, Part III

"83.803 Definitions.—As used in ss. 83.801-83.809:

(5) “Self-service storage facility” means any real property designed and used for the purpose of renting or leasing individual storage space to tenants who are to have access to such space for the purpose of storing and removing personal property. No individual storage space may be used for residential purposes. A self-service storage facility is not a “warehouse” as that term is used in chapter 677. If an owner issues any warehouse receipt, bill of lading, or other document of title for the personal property stored, the owner and the tenant shall be subject to the provisions of chapter 677, and the provisions of this act shall not apply."

This space intentionally left blank.

No and most places also have verbiage in the lease agreement that prohibit habitation or operating a business in there.

Specifically against the law in Arkansas, as is an operator allowing it.

Plus, when I had a storage unit, the contract repeatedly stated that it was a violation of the lease.

Not legal, for something to be legal in any state it has to have a bathroom attached to the unit.

Do you mean actually physically residing in the storage unit, or renting a storage unit in a given state and then using the fact that you have a storage unit there as an address to establish residency in that state even though you actually live in a different state?

friend does similar or did,
he currently resides in a rehab facility, (physical/medical, not drugs etc)
has a storage unit, and used to hang out in it as long as he could, then drove to a walmart parking lot and slept overnight,
he uses a post office as his residency and has his amazon stuff delivered there

he used to be a long haul trucker, so he is used to living out of minimal square footage,

he also tends to smell bad, bathing is not something he did daily until going into rehab'

In Texas, using a self-storage unit as a residence is prohibited by Texas Property Code § 59.009, which says a tenant may not use or allow a self-service storage facility to be used as a residence.

Don't forget that outside rental storage units have locks on the outside only, and if you're inside with the door down when someone (property manager, for instance) decides to lock it, you're stuck for the duration. Might not even have cellphone signal.

Funny story, I helped manage a storage facility many years ago for a couple that wanted to get away for the weekend on occasion and got to know the business. They told me that the husband was making rounds one night before locking up when he noticed an open storage unit door with a box half-way outside. He tried to push it in with his foot but it was too heavy, wouldn't move. He opened it to see what was so heavy, it was full of gold bars! The renter had put his life savings in the unit and forgot to close it.

While not legal in FL, back in my navy days a couple of the younger sailors that lived onboard the ship had storage units at the 24 hour access place just down Mayport rd that they basically live in.

I would never have to live in a storage facility but if I did I would have a lock on the door and the jamb that only I had the key to. And a metal cutting saw if things really went bad.

When we were moving from St. Louis to Michigan, we needed a storage unit to hold some bulky stuff while we were in transition. The guy at the storage unit place must have told me four times that I could not live in the unit, that when they made their rounds at night they would put a lock on any unit that did not have one. Maybe I should have dressed better that day!

That was back in the mid-90s, so it must have been a problem even then.

People will do whatever they need to survive, can't imagine that in Florida in the summer heat, even the "climate controlled" units are not cooled to the temp you'd want to live in.

Maybe there is a market for small storage livable units out there, and we're all missing an opportunity to convert low value land into micro storage homes...
