I'm certainly no expert, but some great advice I received a few years ago was to get the book "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Petersen.

Back in the mid 80s when I started with my Cannon AE-1 I bought a bunch of books and used them extensively. It looks like it is time to dig them out again.
I am going to look at the book you recommended also.
