Low Speed, High Drag![]() |
https://youtu.be/b_8OErHix70 ![]() Link The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGC-N) accidentally sank a fake U.S. aircraft carrier that it uses during training exercises in what they believe is an effective way to prepare for a potential face off with the U.S. Navy — by far the most powerful naval force in the world. “The stricken carrier can be seen, capsized, in commercial satellite imagery,” Forbes reported. “It began to sink when it was being towed back to Bandar Abbas after being attacked.” After reportedly beginning to list “steeply to one side” on July 31, with “half of the flight deck submerged,” the boat has since sunk further. Forbes highlighted a photo that was shared by Aurora Intel and shows PLEIADES satellite imagery of the destroyed aircraft carrier. “The location of the sinking will likely create a serious headache for the Iranian Navy and IRGC-N. It is just outside the harbor entrance to Bandar Abbas, near to the main approach channel,” Forbes added. “The water there is approximately 45 ft deep, which is shallow. This makes it worse for Iran because it cannot be left to sink. It is so shallow that other ships face a very real risk of catastrophic damage if they sail over it. In fact, at least as-of a couple of days ago, it was partly above water. This is a serious shipping hazard.” "Blessed is he who when facing his own demise, thinks only of his front sight.” Malo periculosam, libertatem quam quietam servitutem Montani Semper Liberi

They would be lucky to sink a harbor tug in that manner. A Nimitz class carrier? Might chip the paint. Maybe this is Iran's attempt to foster tourism with a nerw dive site.

There’s a YouTube channel called “darkdocs” that tells a story about how a couple decades back we intentionally sank one of our old retired carriers or rather tried to with bombs/missiles ect. It took a constant beating of us dropping everything but the kitchen sink on it for 4 days and it still didn’t sink. They had to scuttle it, now if we can throw damn near everything we have at an old obsolete ship for that long what the hell do they think they are gonna accomplish?

Given the armament of a Nimitz class boat, these clowns would likely never see the carrier before it and its air wing obliterated them. Kinda like me opting to fight the current MMA heavyweight champ by warming up against RBG. ![]() ----------------------------- Guns are awesome because they shoot solid lead freedom. It's not a matter of sinking the carrier...it's the battle group that goes with it.

As we say over here - 'They couldn't organise a piss-up in a brewery.' Quite how trying [and failing] to sink a model aircraft carrier will prepare them to do the real thing - without preparing on the real thing - is beyond me. I was taught 'train hard - fight easy'. They should have practiced on a real-size fake, and BTW, have they actually SEEN a modern CV close-up? Many years ago I was on the JFK, talking to fellow INT-ers they noted that almost every day they saw faces they'd never seen before - unsurprising with a fully-manned up crew of around 6000 or more.

The battle group would be safe as well. Their only chance is what they have prepped for for decades. Get in close, like they do all the time, but this time they fire. They wouldn’t survive the attack. They would be aghast at the reprisal. A carrier battle group has every element the US has at its disposal. And here’s a thought for every time you read about some “carrier” that the other guys have. US carriers aren’t glorified helo carriers or jump jet haulers. They bring the real deal. 24 hours a day. Good weather bad weather. It’s worse than having a mother in law for a long visit. With any actual war type footing, the elements of the Iranian Navy are a joke. They still could pop you on the nose if you are stupid but nothing that in a fight with the gloves off, it doesn’t keep our guys awake nights worrying about. Probably the opposite. If one Iranian ship opened fire it would give us the excuse to clean their clocks while they were in port. Easy.

Yeah, this is what I was wondering. Though I of course don't put it past the Iranians to do this all on their own.

Its always amusing to see various videos and articles, attempt to explain how vulnerable a US aircraft carrier is and how its obsolete. Never mind the air wing on board, the escorts that sail along with and other assets at its disposal, its own self-defenses, being the fastest ships, outside of subs, in the navy and there's a hell of a lot of compartmentalization and armor on those ships.

Those Iranians are certainly having some bad luck lately. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch. ![]()

That article was wildly pessimistic. They wouldn’t have an operable air defense system within days. Then it becomes whack a mole. Ask the Iraqis how they liked operating under an American air umbrella. Biggest war problem would be convincing DC that it was a war not an occupation or nation building. If you fight them the idea is to knock them back into last century. I know that sounds jingoistic in nature but their military in a true war is a problem with many solutions.

^^^^^ This. If we didn't want to occupy the country, just destroy it's military, government and economy, we have the means to do so. "I vowed to myself to fight against evil more completely and more wholeheartedly than I ever did before. . . . That’s the only way to pay back part of that vast debt, to live up to and try to fulfill that tremendous obligation." Well, bless their hearts. Inshallah, I suppose. If the shoe fits. Someone here had posted that the national anthem of Iran should be the Benny Hill Song whenever they sank their own vessel recently. I could not help but instantly fill my head with this tune upon hearing of their latest self inflicted idiot bomb. Follow the zany antics of these wacky Persians as they... I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. -Ecclesiastes 9:11 ...But the king shall rejoice in God; every one that sweareth by Him shall glory, but the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped. - Psalm 63:11 [excerpted]

Unfortunately, the problem with this example is that the target ship would have been striped of fuel, explosives, things that burn, etc. With nothing volatile on the ship, sinking a metal hull is much harder to do. "Ride to the sound of the big guns."
