This isn't just true with the black community. I once worked a summer at the hospital on the Crow Reservation in MT. One day I got to talking with one of the social workers there (a Crow). He'd gone to school and earned a Masters degree prior to returning home to try to help.

He told me that it took him years to be accepted back into the community...his community. They felt that he felt that he was somehow now better than them and thus essentially shunned him.

He described reservation life to me as a bucket-full of crabs. Whenever one tries to climb out and get away, the others grab him and pull him back down.

Pretty common amongst poor communities all around. Perceived resentment, displaced anger, mis-aligned priorities, jealousy, envy, laziness, general lethargy, all form a toxic social brew, that on the low-end can be manifested as tall-poppy syndrome (see Europe, NZ, Aus), urban ghetto's and economical depressed areas have it bad, and Native communities are the worst. The stories from bush villages in Alaska was pretty rough to hear.

Some of the blacks I worked with at a large company, spoke two different ways. They spoke correct english at work without a black accent and away from work spoke with a more black inflection.

There is nothing racist about what I just wrote. I’m just repeating what one of my black co-workers told me.

I was doing some contract work at a "large beverage bottling company" here in Atlanta and one of the employees would constantly call me to "ax" me a question. Some people don't even bother...
