Hopefully you’ve figured out a temporary bedroom downstairs so she doesn’t have to negotiate the stairs twice or more a day.

If the facts don't fit the theory, change the facts |
I had my ankle crushed with the tendons and ligaments severed, this was back in the stone age (1963) so, I had no fancy external pins sticking outside the cast. They went in repaired the ligaments and tendons, cleaned out the ankle and used some internal hardware (pins, plates, and screws). They put me in a full cast that locked my ankle, knee, and foot at a stationary angle. I wore that heavy cast for about six month and was able to get around fairly well on the crutches they gave me. After six months cast was removed and I was put in a walking cast. When the walking cast was in place the doctor said try to put some weight the ankle.....oh, that hurt when I got up to started putting weight on the ankle my knee gave out the down I went. I was then told to start PT; to build to strength back into the knee and teach it to work as a knee again. Then the walking cast came off and I slowly began to learn how to walk again. Another 3 months and after a little less than a year and a half I was told go back to work with no restrictions. This was done in 1963 and 1964, it hurts after all these years but you get used to putting up with the pain (no meds taken), the screws, pins and plates are still in the ankle. The ankle still swells after I am on it any amount of time, it only swells up to a certain point and you can keep doing what you are doing. I walk with a limp, in pain, and know when the weather going to change. I haven't let that ankle stop me from living my life and downing what I want to do. I retired as teamster after 20 years of throwing chains and tarps on pension. Took a second full time job as correction officer in Pa State Prison System and after 20 years retired again pension I am still hobbling along in woods hunting, fishing, and four wheeling. Just remember don't let lives bad breaks slow you down or believe it when these so called medical expects try to limit what you can do.
