I tried the metal cubes before. But I learned it's better to just add water. You could add water to take away the sting of rot gut whiskey or open up the flavors and smells of good whiskey. Lowering the temperature of good whiskey closes the "nose" of the whiskey and you won't get all the flavors and smells.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

I have a 6-pack of them - more than enough for 2-3 rounds. I like them, they chill drinks just right without watering down the flavor, and maintenance is easy. Just remember to a) rinse ALL of the soap off when washing and b) be mindful of the glass’s position when getting to the bottom…’smarts’ is an understatement after getting hit in the mouth!

I have a set of SS cubes have have used them for a couple of years now. I'm used to them and I like them. I don't like my bourbon watered down and I like it chilled, so I keep a glass in the freezer and use that and the SS cube to chill my spirits.

I own 8 of the stainless kind. They seemed like a great idea at the time. I used them a handful of times then they spent years in the freezer door.

I don't want my whisky all that cold to start with. And if I do decide to add a little ice, I also expect and want the water to slightly dilute the spirits. Many whiskys change character a little with a little water added.

Gin or vodka are different, as I sometimes want those damn cold. Putting the bottle in the freezer is my solution. Then, any ice won't melt so fast when added to already cold hooch.

i tried the soapstone ones.
didnt seem to be as cold as ice is.
didnt seem to stay as cold as long as ice does.
eventually they took on the taste of old ice, despite being used in a new fridge/freezer with no weird smells. also never could get them "clean" of the smell afterwards. guess they shouldnt just stay in the freezer all the time, only when you want them but then that defeats the purpose of being "ice".
stainless would probably be far better.
but overall i still like a single large cube or ball of regular ice.

I tried the stone cubes and didn’t care for them. Actually didn’t work that well at all. I reverted back to making solid, clear ice balls in silicone molds. Mucho bettero!! The ice spheres are solid enough that they don’t melt that fast and my Woodford Reserve Double Oaked doesn’t get watered down.
