Anyway, yeah. The answer to the OP's question is indeed "NO." Not even close.

Of course not - while you may be trying to apply logic, you're also being silly. This has never been a thing, and is widely known to just create a potentially useless "travel credit".

Not right, but somehow not illegal.

Having spent 40 years in the IT Services arena, I know how hard it was to convince companies like this that their old, outdated and improperly sized software solutions needed to be completely replaced. Not many people in top leadership would be willing to make the investment. They preferred to kick the software can down the road for the next leadership team.

I bet Southwest is willing to do it now. Wink

My understanding is that SWA has two issues. The software issue is reportedly real, but it’s also been stated that the pilot’s union told corporate 20 months ago that this software problem was critical. The other issue is the pilot’s union itself.

My brother and SIL had a flight to PHX cancelled yesterday morning, on their way to the airport at 0345. I’ve got a friend scheduled to fly down to PHX today. No word yet. Another who is down in Phoenix, trying to get out—for a week or more.

Someone would have to sue them over the issue to get anything. And for the individual consumers who are out 3 or low 4 digits, it isn't worth it.

Just had family go through this, twice, with Southwest at DIA

Stepdad was flying LAS to DIA on 12/22
Flight canceled & he got bumped to a very late flight (DIA arrival just after midnight)
We had 4 phones going trying to get through to SW & get his flight changed. Even went as far as booking a different flight on United.
United flight got cancelled as well, and he was able to get on a flight with SW later that day.

He & my mom were due to fly DIA > LAS on 12/26. Got down to DIA & found nearly everything cancelled, possibly through Thursday.
They ended up just making the drive to Vegas instead of waiting on the potential rescheduled flight.

Makes me glad we decided to drive from Houston to Denver instead of flying.

DIA? Are you referring to Denver? I only know it as DEN.

Ever since they built that $5 billion monstrosity decades ago … It’s been Denver International Airport aka DIA.

That Memo sure makes a case that there is a worker shortage…

Yes, Denver
Looks like the official code is, in fact, DEN.
Locally known as DIA, according to wiki.

Probably got changed to DEN after the flap when it initially opened to teething problems on the luggage handling system and way too many folks were saying it should have been named DOA.

Their CIO was the major projects director for 17 years prior to being CIO for 5. She's had 20 years to get this fixed.

I'm going to guess - it's a guess, mind you -- that employees are tired of being yelled at, cursed at, threatened and berated. Still the same root problem (weather-triggered emergency that can't be adequately managed by their IT systems).

But I am just guessing. No inside info here.

Wait - do we want the government to regulate and police Southwest out of this mess?

(And in a little funny anecdote - my niece's husband had to get from Houston to Dallas on Tuesday to start pilot training with Southwest, as he is a new hire, and not qualified in a 737. He had to fly American to get there.)

Do we know whether she proposed fixes? Do we know whether her proposals were shot down by higher ups? For all we know, she is now sending "I told you so" memos to the boss. Or maybe she fucked it up - do we know?

So Chris Johnson threatens everybody with termination if they need to take time off.
"The beatings will continue until morale improves"!
Just a guess: SW ground ops is probably understaffed and those that are working are fed up. Throw in some Flu and weather and chaos reigns.
