Mrs Cliff mad a comment in passing about eventually getting some more bed sheets. What do we like? Is thread count that important? What we have feels nice, just don't want to be caught in the linen closet looking at tags. Want to surprise her with some nice sheets. Mattress is about a 12 inches thick, king size.

Just bought the Snowe Percale Sheet Set online. They are 500 thread count Eqyptian cotton, milled and finished in Italy.

Washed it once, put it on the bed, and they feels like luxury hotel sheets. Haven't had them long enough to gauge longevity, but really like the quality so far.

Yes, the thread count is important. However, understand that the manufacturers are all over the place with crazy claims. They will use a "double ply thread" and then double the claimed thread count. In other words, a 300 thread count sheet that is sewn with 2-ply will claim to be 600 thread count. OR they will count the threads is "both directions", doubling the count again. I've bought 1200 thread count so-called "Egyptian cotton" sheets that felt like sandpaper compared to high quality 350 single-ply threaded cotton sheets.

We have also bought sheets that felt really soft right out of the package only to have them pill up after a few washes and feel terrible.

If you want cotton, my advice is to forgo buying them online. We tried numerous times to purchase that way, and ended up returning no less than 6 sets. (My wife is a bit of a sheet snob!
Go to a higher end store and actually feel them. Then, if they start pilling up after a wash or two, it's easy to take them back without paying shipping.

You want single-ply long staple cotton thread. The long staple part is important. Probably about 600 thread count. My wife prefers the sateen weave, not percale. (Sateen is a bit "shinier" and has a softer feel, while percale is more "crisp" and stiffer).

All that being said, my wife has made the switch to silk sheets and will never go back to cotton. They are cooler in the summer, warmer in the winter, are hypoallergenic, and actually are better for your skin. IF you go this route, you'll want sheets that are 19-22 momme weight. (Silk sheets are not measured by thread count). 19 is good, and you will pay double for 22. Be advised, silk sheets are expensive. Expect to pay about $350 for a set (top sheet, fitted sheet) if they are of decent quality. If you're paying less, beware.

I just checked with the wifey. The silk sheets she has bought the last two times came from here: www.feelingpampered.com. $389 for a four-piece set. (both sheets, and two pillow cases). Genuine Mullberry charmeuse silk (what you want). And LOTS of colors to choose from.

We have found the Hotel Premier Collection 650 thread count Egyptian Cotton sheet sets from Sam's Club to be of very high quality.

Amazon Basics Jersey sheets. Like sleeping on a t-shirt.

After I bought my first bed, I went out and got some super-high thread-count sheets, something like 800ct. Any case, my whiskers would snag and chew-up the pillow cases. I've avoided super-high thread count sheets since then.

Been pretty happy (& so has she ) with the Wamsutta sheets from Bed, Bath & Beyond; use those coupons. Not sure what the thread count is....400-500ct but, they're smooth as opposed to super soft or, flannel-like. Avoid the Amazon sheets, and if buying from Costco, get the higher-priced ones.

We’ve had Boll & Branch sheets on our bed for quite a long time. They hold up well, they’re certainly well made, and they are soft. There’s a couple things that I don’t like about them though. I think our mattress is as deep as the majority sold, it’s only about 5 years old and is a Serta IComfort. I bring up the mattress because because the fitted sheet from B&B doesn’t fit tight, like it’s made for a much deeper mattress. I’m a restless sleeper. The bottom sheet gets kinda wadded up under me. Doesn’t happen with my wife, who sleeps like the dead.

The other thing that bothers me a bit is that every morning I find the pillowcase 1/3 of the way off the pillow. This is standard size pillows and cases. Just kind of aggravating. The case just fits the pillow.

I wouldn’t dismiss the idea of buying them again, and I’ll be interested to read the experience of others with B&B, but I’ll also be interested to see what others here like.

I wish you would have asked this question two days earlier, as that was part of a gift to my wife and myself. Went to Kohl's, and although they didn't have anything I liked, I did walk out the door with a "hotel quality" goose down comforter for 50% off.

Seems very well made. Time will tell, but we love it so far...

Silk and sateen trap body heat, so if you guys sleep hot, then those fabrics may not suit you year round.

The higher the thread count, the denser and warmer the sheet. I like lower thread counts and even some blends because I like a crisper (not as soft), cooler sheet.

Costco has very good sheet sets for very reasonable prices.

Percale is what you'd probably think of as "normal" weave - a thread goes over one thread then under one thread, over one, under one, etc.

Sateen is a weave where a thread goes over three or four then under one. This makes the sheets feel smoother (because the surface of the sheet is made of up of longer segments of thread) and softer (because the weave is looser and more flexible) but also makes them less durable (because the longer segments are easier to snag or damage). It's also easier to get a higher thread count with sateen sheets.

Always cool. Always crisp. We have 3 sets now. They beat the pants of "hotel" type sheets, as far as cool and crisp goes.

I bought a set of Boll and Branch and ended up sending them back. They are nice and packaged very well, but after sleeping on them and comparing them to our old sheets we really couldn't tell much difference. Our other sheets cost about $75 for the set, B&B are about 250.

Would love to try some nicer sheets again so I might give one of these other brands a shot.
