True Q.

You always have to consider the source of the stats, plus, the person who might twist the statistics to their own end.

If all the statisticians were laid end to end, they couldn't reach a conclusion.

Many people use statistics the way the drunk uses a lamp post - to hold themselves up rather than for any light they might provide.

Statistics are:

52 % speculation
49 % what they want the numbers to say
2.4% attention to detail and accuracy.

89.3% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

I must disagree about statistics, if they are used correctly. John Lott used stats to show that areas with a large number of firearms influenced the crime rate. Read "More guns, less crime"! His process was vetted by his peers (other statisticians" and was deemed sound!!! So, as long as the stats have been challenged and proven to be correct, I'll go with that!!!

Whenever someone provides me with stats to prove their point, I ask for the root data, to see how it was collected and analyzed. 99% of the time they walk away. (IE, they have no clue or they know they are bogus).
