It's good that it's finally over. After 2 juries found her not guilty. Everyone could see from the evidence that she didn't hit him or kill him. There does seem to be quite a bit of corruption in Mass from the looks of things.

The little bit I read made this look like a very weak case to me.
They could have saved a lot of money negotiating a plea over the DUI.

Agreed. I listened to a lot of the testimony and read up on the evidence and don't think she did it. Mass fucked this up from the go.

Why is this plastered all over the news everywhere?
People are getting killed all the time but we never hear of it.
BTW, until today I never heard of her before either.

I work with a guy who lives near Boston. He was very interested in this case, and as such, I learned quite a bit of the details and followed a good bit of the trial. If you cared to know even half of it, you would come to the conclusion that there's almost zero chance she hit him with her car. This was a frame job by the crooked Canton police, I have no doubt about it. This was the right and just verdict, for the reasons you stated but also because she's factually innocent.

I think it was the strong appearance that it was a bag job by a bunch of connected people trying to frame her for something they did. So it fascinated people. It'll be interesting to see what dominoes fall now that she's been acquitted. Mass State Police has already fired the lead detective as a result of his handling of this case.

The crazy thing about it is, that nobody would have likely heard about this case beyond the initial news report if it wasn't for a local blogger/reporter who dug into it and found out that everything was very sketchy. If you look up Turtleboy you'll find his website and tons of articles about it if you have some spare time.

Netflix had a docuseries on Karen Read that followed her up to her mistrial. Canton police have a problem for sure and it appears to be systemic. I was surprised that she was not found not guilty in her first trial.

She wasn't found Not Guilty twice.

Her first trial ended in a hung jury (a jury that cannot reach a unanimous decision either way), and was declared a mistrial, with no verdict entered.

This was the prosecution's second attempt at trial, and she was found Not Guilty by a unanimous jury (for the first time).

^^^ I think he meant that but misstated it. A defendant can appeal a guilty verdict, but prosecution cannot appeal a not guilty. They don't get a do-over.

In the first trial the jury found her not guilty on murder and manslaughter but was hung on a lesser included. They didn't fill out the verdict forms or publish the verdict and the judge quickly declared a mistrial without any discussion. That's why I said she's been found not guilty by two juries.

Easy for you to say from wherever far away you are but those of us who are local and have actually been following all the details of this know she was FRAMED.

John O'Keefe was murdered in the house and the cops and Canton townies tried to pin it on her.

Some light reading for you:

Karen Read is Not Guilty

If you didn't follow this case, or even just consumed tidbits from the media, you really can't appreciate the depths of corruption and injustice that was targeted at Karen Read. There's just so much that I won't even try going into all the details. The initial investigation into John O'Keefe's death was so shoddy and corrupted, that even the FBI got involved, a fact that the defense was prohibited from mentioning at trial. There are plenty of sources out there should anyone care to delve into the frame job further.

Read's lead defense attorney Alan Jackson's closing argument. The judge limited closing arguments to an hour and 15 mins. Given more time, Jackson could've covered a lot more. Still, he had an excellent closing.
