My WASTE KANG disposal, Model 9980, was installed July 2012. It's a fabulous disposal. Baby yaks, beware.

We've never had odor issues with it, up until the last couple of months. I cleaned the blades with salt and double handful of ice cubes, then poured white vinegar down the disposal, followed by a box of baking soda, and more vinegar.

This eliminated the odor for a couple of days, but now it's back, just not as strong.

I know there are products specific to cleaning disposals and eliminating odor, but I wonder if anyone has something else I might try before laying out 20 bucks for some product or other, or, perhaps a recommendation for one of these products specifically, rather than me just taking my chances with whatever is on Amazon or at Home depot.

This occurred to me, but I am no plumber. I'll take a look, but there's a about a 40% chance that if I check a hose under my sink, my entire neighborhood might get flooded.

Also not a bad idea to run hot water down the drain for a few minutes weekly.

I use a lot of lemons in my cooking. I slice the rinds thin and run them down the waste king. This seems to help kill odors. I also occasionally run a cup of bleach down when running.

Also have you cleaned your dishwasher overflow tube? Never mind you answered while I was typing.

Run the dishwasher through a few full cycles (with dishwasherdetergent). No need to run the heated Dry cycle.

Cutting a lemon in half and throwing each half in the disposal, letting the first one get fully chewed up before throwing the second one in, has always worked for me.

I've used those foaming disposal cleaning tablets every 3-6 months with good results.

At the risk of asking the obvious, have you removed the rubber flappy cover thingie (technical term) and cleaned the underside of that well, and also under the rim of drain with a brush or some such? Not something you should have to do regularly, but if your stank is in the sank....

Dishwasher drain hoses are usually connected to the disposal so if there is some funk on that end might take care of it while also draining the clean water (from not doing dishes just a cycle) into the disposal.

My guess is then just years of gunk in the disposal, maybe even a crack in the housing. Try one of the deep cleaners above like the Pink suggestion.

I seem to go through disposals far more than I should and I don’t even use them heavily, hence the check for cracks in the housing/leaks.

I have used Plink, as well as lemons and they have done well with odors, unless you have mold around the rubber gasket/guard. Also, the lemon rinds are good for the oils in them and the machine parts.

I frequently stick the disposal baffle/splash guard in the dishwasher once a month or so.
When I do that I take a few paper towels and wipe around the inside top of the disposal under the baffle.
It gets pretty nasty in there.
With that I replace the baffle every couple years.
They're cheap on Amazon.


Not sure if the baffle/splash guard is removable in the Waste King 9980.

Another vote for cut up lemons here. I usually cut 'em into 1/8's and then stop the motor after it only chews for 2-3 seconds, then leave 'em in till the next day.

As others have said. I half a lemon. Toss it in with a touch of dish soap. Rinse and repeat with the other half.

Similar to lemons, if you eat fresh oranges, the peel will help keep the Waste Kang clean.

This is the only stuff I've found that actually works and it works well.
Use a wad of paper towels around the plastic hose to force the foam into the disposal until it's completely full and then let it sit for an hour or so.
