ID a snake, dead, badly smashed
pnc bank tennessee

Found this on our little walk tonight. I can't figure out what kind it is. It's badly smashed.

SIG Forum is a wealth of knowledge so I figured that I would ask the brain trust.

Agreed on not a copperhead. Obviously not a water moccasin or coral snake. While there is one species of rattlesnake that doesn't have rattles, it only lives on some islands off Baja California, so it would be very odd to find one in Kentucky.

Having eliminated the four types of venomous snakes native to the US, even without further ID, it is extraordinarily unlikely it was a venomous snake.

The closest match from the following guide to common Kentucky snakes looks like the young black rat snake, but I wouldn't call it a conclusive ID.

Looks like what we call a rat snake or corn snake.

can't really make out the head shape or presence of a small rattle

but it 'could' be this guy

I think Sig 209 is correct. Not all pygmy's have rattles. Nasty bite and they lie is small spaces.

Certainly resembles a Pygmy but that's a good bit north of where this article says they live. Also looks like it says the farther north the darker color they have.

Looks kind of like a pigmy rattlesnake, but seems to be well outside it's accepted range.

Could also be an Eastern Hognose, they have all kinds of morphs and some of them are similar to that. Hard to tell without a better picture.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

I agree 100%. It is clearly not any of the venomous snakes. The markings don't match a pygmy rattlesnake, it lacks the orange/red color along the top, and the background color is awfully light, too. It could be a rat snake, but there are a lot of snakes with similar patterns. Without the head, it is harder to tell.

Don't wantonly kill snakes. I know the OP didn't.

Hognose or rat snake seem to match best after looking at a few pics elsewhere...
