Ok. I like watches. I don’t love them or collect them. I have a nice Hamilton automatic that I first bought after getting my Navy wings, lost and replaced when I made captain at my airline. Nice watch. Keeps horrendous time. I haven’t done it any favors by letting it wind down multiple times over the years but there it is.

G Shocks. I have one. Solar powered and atomic clock. Keeps phenomenal time obviously but the face is a blacked model so it’s hard to actually read the time.

Started doing research. The Mudman series seems perfect. Lots of features, atomic, solar, etc. 700 bucks. Seems extreme for a Casio to me. Found the perfect watch Casio makes. GWG100. Solar, atomic, and the LED windows you can actually read. Ie, light window dark numerals. The reverse are nearly impossible to read. Plus, they figured out the backlighting. It actually works. Two sources, one for hands one for windows. Perfect.

They don’t really import this watch. It’s for the Asian Market or something. Son of a.....
All for nothing. Find a similar model. GSG100. Exact same watch minus the atomic timeckeeping feature. And about a hundred and a half less. To the door at 173.

So I have had this watch a month now. Casio claims 15 seconds, plus or minus, a month. I’ve been paying attention. It’s 3 seconds off after a month. At this rate I probably won’t correct the time for nearly a year.

Anyway, I was pleasantly shocked at the accuracy and now am glad that I didn’t spend a bunch more to correct 3 seconds a month.

Takeaways. Never buy a watch that is a “blackout” model. Looks cool, really hard to use as a watch. Don’t get the reverse LED screens, Ie black screen light numerals, see above. Atomic time keeping is wicked cool. It’s not 150 dollars worth of wicked cool. There are like a million G Shock versions. Who knew?

While I agree the reverse LCD is harder to read in poor light than the normal display, I've never regretted getting one. My ~2005 vintage GW-5600BF-1JF was also a Japanese domestic market only model which I bought through Higuchi. It is my sole Casio digital watch.

I got the GG-1000 from that amateuer Truong fella ( ) that hangs out here some. Great and tough Casio, but not analog. Me likey.

LCD. Duh.

Solar power is my thing I look for first. I have a bunch of watches waiting to get a new battery. Hate doing it. Solar is definitely my most important feature.

I like analog. I really like the price point of those digital g shocks though. Solar and atomic for under a hundred bucks. Last forever.

I was kind of overwhelmed and underwhelmed when looking at the features. Compass maybe, barometer altimeter depth gauge? Not so much.

They have gotten very proud of their lineup though.

G8000 in ODG with blackface. Very fond of it, reverse screen not an issue for me.

I've got a G Shock (GBA800) I bought from Dave T this past summer (Thanks Dave!). It works great, except the light only comes on for about 1 second each time you press the button. I mainly use it when I go camping, and when I wake up in the middle of the night it takes me more than 1 second for my eyes to adjust and read the time! I have to press the button 4 or 5 times to read it. Old age problems I guess.

They have improved that feature in my watch. It has a tilt feature that allows the watch to light up when you tilt it in darkness for user selectable 1 or 3 second span. I turned that feature off. It sometimes would light up when I didn’t want it, wastes battery (whatever), and I just hold the button for as long as I want it lit up.

The reverse LCD thing is no big deal. Unless you actually need to know what the panel says and it’s dark. The older watches didn’t even light up the LCD panels just the hands. I work at night a lot. The reverse panels might as well be invisible. Compare them side by side and it’s a wonder Casio even gives you an option. It’s all for aesthetic purpose because on a practical standpoint it’s a no brainer.

I bought this G-Shock about 9 months ago and it hasn't left my wrist since. I love the solar power and atomic timekeeping. It syncs every night, so I know it's accurate to the second. And, in spite of me being a cave dweller, I've never seen the battery reserve drop down from the high setting.

simple, cheap, atomic + solar.

I have a mudman as well. I love it but I hate that the LCD doesn’t light up when the light comes on. My timex from high school does that.

If I’m understanding you, they have corrected this. My mudman, gsg100, has two lights. One is a black light that illuminates the hands, and the second light illuminates the lcd windows. You can see and read everything even in pitch black.

I love mine, but the size of it sometimes makes it difficult to put on my shirt.

I have a plain-jane GA-100 model. Black watch face and two white hands. Simple. It makes for a quick read, especially when noting engine start time and departure time.

I saw the GS-1200B-1AJF some years ago and had to have it but like you, found it was a model not imported. So at the advice of several on WatchUSeek I got on Rukuten and had it imported.

I am a G Shock fan, especially the solar. Primary reason, I am a klutz and can't have nice things. G Shocks are like Glocks, one can ignore them and they keep on working.

I once bought a nicer Seiko, when the battery died I took it back to the shop for a new one. The clerk rated it poor condition and berated me, in a nice way, that I should be more careful with it. Good luck with that, it isn't my nature hence the G Shock.

I have a GW-6900 that's solar/atomic that I've been beating on for about 7 or 8 years. I have a two nicer Citizen watches, but I hardly ever wear them.

I've been looking at G-Shocks for nearly a year and I'd certainly have one by now, but I'm a little OCD when it comes to shopping for such things and want to make sure I purchase the one I like the most from their hundreds of various models. Unfortunately, there's no way to search through them all with any kind of efficiency because Casio is too lazy to create any sort of useful, let alone comprehensive, search tool on their website (US or global - I've looked at all of the English language ones I can find).

My daily wear watch for 20 years was a G-SHOCK MR-G MRG-100T-8 titanium my father got for me in Japan. A few years ago the strap broke and I can't find a replacement.
I also have a Seiko A258-5069 that had the crystal cracked and I had to stop wearing it because of concerns over water damage. It was my high school graduation present in 1978.
Does anyone know if these are repairable? and perhaps were they could be sent for the work?

Casio clearly sells enough watches to keep the lights on. However, this also leads to exactly what the complaint above was. Their website is crap. You would think you could filter for features you want. Nope. You basically filter by broad categories like master of G and mudman and other nonsensical categories that mean nothing beyond marketing. Infuriating.

Then you finally winnow it down to your watch of choice only to find it’s not directly for sake in the old USofA. Which forces you through a reseller which may or may not be authentic. Ugh.

If you like analogs, my research has narrowed my perfect-ish watch down to the GWG and GSG100. Difference being 150 dollars and atomic timekeeping. The ABC (altimeter barometer compass) styles seem cool but wildly unnecessary.

These two look good, easy to read, work great in dark, and keep stunning time and the gsg won’t break the bank. If you like digital the one above has the good stuff and is under a hundred bucks.
