Former Black Panther Angela Davis shocked to learn she is a descendant of the Mayflower

Racial activist and former fugitive Angela Davis was shocked to learn she is a Mayflower descendent on Tuesday's episode of "Finding Your Roots" on PBS.

Davis is notorious for working with the Communist Party USA and the Black Panther Party in the 1960s and 70s. Her involvement in the armed takeover of a California courtroom resulted in four deaths and her placement on the FBI's Most Wanted List.

Now 79, Davis was the latest to appear on the PBS show where celebrities and public figures learn about their ancestry.

Near the end of the episode, after discussing multiple members of her family, the former Black Panther learned she descended from William Brewster, one of the 101 people who came to the colonies in 1620 aboard the Mayflower.



Angela Davis, who lived a life of radical activism, was overwhelmed at the thought of being descended from one of America's founding settlers.

Henry Louis Gates Jr., the show’s host and director of the Hutchins Center for African & African American Research at Harvard University, shared a clip from the episode on Twitter.

"Our researchers discovered #AngelaDavis’s ancestors traveled to the US on the Mayflower and here is her reaction. #FindingYourRoots," he tweeted.

"Do you know what you’re looking at? That is a list of the passengers on the Mayflower," Gates asked Davis in the video.

"No, I can't believe this," Davis replied, laughing. "No, my ancestors did not come here on the Mayflower."

She continued to protest while Gates confirmed the findings then responded, "Oof. That’s a little bit too much to deal with right now."

"Would you ever in your wildest dreams think that you may have been descended from the people who laid the foundation of this country?" he asked.

"Never, never, never, never, never," she said.

Twitter users across the political spectrum expressed surprise or fascination at the revelation as well.

"I find moments like this fascinating. I can trace all of my ancestors—two of whom are still living—to four ocean crossings between 1949 and 1952," NPR producer Julian Hayda wrote. "To think that one's roots can go back 400 years—with tens of thousands of people between slave ships and the Mayflower is astonishing."

NBC News anchor Andrea Mitchell wrote, "Love this historical find Professor Gates! And love your show on PBS."

Davis has been a polarizing figure in American politics. Some students on the campus of UCLA took offense to this banner featuring former professor and avowed communist Angela Davis. (UCLA.edu)

"It’s actually a beautiful reaction," National Review Online senior writer Michael Brendan Dougherty tweeted.

"Think about it from both perspectives. Almost certainly exploitation played its role. But someone who came on the Mayflower has a radical like Angela Davis as a descendant," he observed. "America is huge. Talk of divorce is senseless In light of this reality."

In addition to her racism towards white people, she now owes reparations to black people, kind of ironic. I wonder if she's willing to write a check for the systemic racism that she's apart of from our nation's very inception.

Ironically me as a white looking person and her as a black looking person she's has way more blood on her hands than I do. My family were refugees in 1939. She's be a part of systemic racism since it's onset.

Does this disqualify her from receiving reperations? That would be tragic.

Some people might remember this dude, he was the guy who was seen breaking into his front door of his house and police showed up to ask questions, with Gates being uncooperative, yelling at the officers. His arrest for disorderly conduct brought out the race baiters, the biggest one being Obama, who called the arrest "stupid" and of course started the national conversation about "blacks profiled by police". And of course, that was not the case in this incident.

That show can be rather interesting; however, Angela Davis is not the only person they’ve researched that makes one ask, “ Why TF did they think we cared about that person?”

Or another, perhaps more pertinent question, is why watch the show at all?

Henry Gates has proven himself to be a truly racist individual so why give any credence, legitimacy, or authority to someone of his ilk?

On the other hand, maybe she should look back to see her own advice to the oppressor class.

BTW, a search of her net worth shows between $1 to $5 million. To be so oppressed.

Face it Angela, you're related to a the Puritans. Have fun learning about John Cotton and Richard Mather.

Even better that her ancestors have already tried communism and proved beyond doubt that it didn't work and switched to private property and personal responsibility in order to make the colony thrive/survive.

I remember the entire country was transfixed on this event as it unfolded. The judge in the picture was indeed killed by the shotgun taped to his neck (along with a .357 round to the chest). Dr. Davis had purchased it two days earlier (she actually owned several of the firearms used in the attempted escape, though claims she had no idea anyone was planning to do something like this).

I certainly remember the incident; I did not know this was the same guy.

It is amusing that it bothers her so much, and we can all get a kick out of her discomfort.

It doesn't make any sense, because we cannot, of course, control who our ancestors are. I suppose if your politics are identity politics based on what group you think you belong to, you open yourself up to this problem.

The quandary that ideologues face when the ethics and morals they've created, ends up boxing them in. Go too far in your beliefs, and you may end up discovering a distasteful surprise.
