I have been through 6’s and 7’s having lived in California for 60 years.

For you guys out there it’s a big one.

When we have a quake we sit here and guess what it is on the Richter scale.

My basement was shaking and the dogs were barking. It's amazing how over the top the coverage was.

Folks may forget that Virginia and the adjacent Washington, DC area experienced a magnitude 5.8 earthquake in 2011. At the time, I was in an office building which definitely shook.

Just checked USGS' "Did you feel it?" site and there has been 10 aftershocks in NJ between M1.8 and M2.2. About 15 minutes ago, there was also a M4.0

I didn't feel it. My son that lives closer to the center said the house shook and things fell off the shelves.

A second earthquake has rocked New Jersey and the surrounding area on Friday, following an earlier tremor that was felt as far away as Delaware.

The second quake occurred at 5:59 p.m. at a magnitude of 4.0 on the Richter scale, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was centered just southwest of Gladstone, N.J.

Sitting at my desk, too.

I thought “Who the hell is driving a cement mixer up my driveway?”

Felt, heard the low frequency rumbling for 20-30 seconds.

It's interesting how the shock waves are in fact waves, spreading out as they get farther away. Watching a video last night of a house in Jersey close to the center of it (the first one), it was much more violent and rapid shaking than we got, but I was surprised how quickly it was over. The total duration was a good deal shorter than what I felt here.

The part that boggles my mind is how you could hear it, long before you felt it. Supposedly you're not "hearing" the earthquake, but everything it's moving.

I was actually in Manhattan Friday for the auto show when this happened. Everyone's phone went insane with the alert but didn't feel a thing.

The phone alerts were funny. The phone alerts came (both my phones anyway) an hour and twenty minutes or more after it happened. I was thinking "What's the point?" (at this point?)

We got emails and text alerts through work about <10 minutes later instructing people how to report injuries and any structural damage. That's mostly to keep 20k snowflakes from freaking out.

I'm pretty sure I felt it in Southern NH. I was outside shoveling snow (while listening to music thru earbuds at the time) and felt rumbling that I thought was a large truck coming up the hill, except NO truck ever came by, and it wasn't part of the song either! Less than ten minutes later I rec'd a text from my wife about the earthquake, essentially relaying the info from family we have in NJ. The timing was undeniable, and confirmed later when I checked the time stamp provided by the USGS.

So, a bit of pressure got let off. Sounds like a good thing.

I do hope that I can get through the rest of my life without any super bad natural disasters etc. in my country.
