Cal Thomas: The bold move Trump can make to get to bottom of Russian 'meddling' in 2016 election Did President Trump bungle the moment in Helsinki by casting doubt on American intelligence findings that Russian agents “meddled” in the 2016 election? His critics, including some Republicans, say so — and on Tuesday, Trump said he had misspoken when he expressed doubt about Russian culpability — but several things need to be kept in mind. The first is that Russia and the United States have been meddling with, or spying on, each other for decades. That is hardly a secret. Second, according to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, no votes were altered, and the election outcome was not affected by the alleged meddling. Third, the fealty most Democrats and some Republicans are showing for the credibility of U.S. intelligence today was lacking after it was discovered that Iraq did not have weapons of mass destruction. Every intelligence agency in the U.S. and Britain swore (some under oath) that Saddam Hussein had WMD. It was the rationale President George W. Bush used to invade Iraq, topple Saddam and install a government more to his liking. Some older history might serve to prove that U.S. intelligence findings are not always accurate, or worth taking at immediate face value. On December 22, 1963, former President Harry Truman wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post. In it, Truman said that the Central Intelligence Agency, which he created, had become “an operational and at times a policy-making arm of the Government. This has led to trouble and may have compounded our difficulties in several explosive areas.” And so, Truman wrote, “I decided to set up a special organization charged with the collection of all intelligence reports from every available source, and to have those reports reach me as President without department ‘treatment’ or interpretations. I wanted and needed the information in its ‘natural raw’ state and in as comprehensive a volume as it was practical for me to make full use of it. But the most important thing about this move was to guard against the chance of intelligence being used to influence or to lead the President into unwise decisions — and I thought it was necessary that the President do his own thinking and evaluating.” Even then there were concerns about the accuracy and credibility of intelligence material. In 1975, a congressional committee chaired by Sen. Frank Church (D-Idaho) investigated abuses by the CIA, National Security Agency, FBI and IRS. These included allegations that the U.S. Army was spying on American civilians, and that the CIA had conducted assassination attempts against foreign leaders and covert operations to subvert foreign governments. Seymour Hersh of The New York Times wrote a lengthy story detailing attempts by U.S. intelligence agencies to collect information on the political activities of American citizens. Democrats took the lead in reforming intelligence agencies to make them more accountable to Congress, though some critics said they went too far, damaging legitimate intelligence-gathering operations. In 2016, the website Politico ran a story about Democrats’ tumultuous relationship with the CIA. After the Senate Intelligence Committee had launched an investigation into the CIA’s alleged use of torture, including waterboarding, of suspected terrorist captives, leading Democrats charged that the agency was dragging its feet “and perhaps even intentionally undermining the congressional probe,” Politico reported. Sens. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and Mark Udall (D-Colo.) called for CIA director John Brennan to resign. Now, many Democrats and most of the left are applauding Brennan for calling President Trump a traitor and demanding he be impeached. President Trump can diffuse much of the heat surrounding Russian “meddling” in the 2016 election by declassifying, as William McGurn of The Wall Street Journal suggests, “all material subpoenaed by Congress regarding Russia and collusion and possible FBI or Justice Department abuses.” President Trump might have done better in Helsinki if he had made such an announcement while standing next to Vladimir Putin. He has the constitutional authority to do it. This controversy began when a special counsel was named under the false pretense that a “dossier” paid for by the Democratic National Committee and the Hillary Clinton campaign was legitimate. This fiasco needs to be ended by getting to the truth contained in those classified documents the Justice Department has refused to share with Congress. Targeted and entrapped… likely the case, I suspect. “The wife of former Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos recently defended her husband before lawmakers on Capitol Hill. … Mangiante has been her husband’s most loyal defender since he pleaded guilty last year to making false statements to the FBI. She believes Papadopoulos may be the victim of entrapment, and says he is being targeted because of his links to the president…” http://www.oann.com/george-pap...ill-defends-husband/ Serious about crackers

House Republicans Block Subpoena of Putin-Meeting Interpreter National Review Jack Crowe Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee blocked on Thursday a request by panel Democrats to subpoena the interpreter who attended President Trump’s otherwise private meeting with Vladimir Putin on Monday. After committee chairman Devin Nunes (R.,Calif.) initially refused to recognize Representative Adam Schiff’s (D., Calif.) call for a vote to compel the interpreter’s private testimony, the panel defeated the motion along party lines, 11–6. “This is an extraordinary remedy, I realize,” Schiff reportedly told his colleagues on the Committee. “But then it’s extraordinary for the president of the United States to ask all of his senior staff essentials to leave the room and have a conversation with an adversary, and then in a public conversation disavow his own intelligence agencies and in many respects disavow his own country.” The White House has not been forthcoming with specifics about the substance of Monday’s meeting in Helsinki, Finland, prompting condemnation from congressional Democrats eager to know what Trump and Putin discussed. Democratic scrutiny was heightened Wednesday after the Russian ambassador to the U.S. told Russian reporters that a number of “important verbal agreements” related to significant bilateral arms-control treaties were reached during the sit-down meeting. Pentagon officials could not provide any information when asked Wednesday if agreements related to military operations were reached. Asked Wednesday afternoon if he would support bringing the interpreter before Congress to testify, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.) responded “absolutely not,” and suggested that it would establish a precedent that would prevent future president’s from meeting privately with foreign heads of state. Trump’s apparent deference to Putin during the press conference that followed the meeting drew the ire of lawmakers on both sides of the aisle and many of the president’s allies in the media. The White House later walked backed Trump’s endorsement of Putin’s denial of election meddling and reiterated Trump’s faith in the American intelligence community. While the press conference created a flurry of criticism within the Beltway, Republican voters overwhelmingly approved of the performance. According to an Axios/Survey Monkey poll released Thursday, 79 percent of Republicans approved of the press conference while 91 percent of Democrats disapproved. A Wednesday CBS News poll reflected similar findings. Link Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me. When you had the votes, we did things your way. Just some of my random thoughts on the whole Russian thing. So, the "proof" the Russians meddled in the election so far consists of some facebook crap and some hackers setting bots and trolls in comments and twitter. Supposedly there was a piece of russian code found when the DNC computers were hacked. Questions: 1. Why would the Russians want Trump when they owned Hilary through the Uranium One deal. You know they some dirt on her and Bill. In fact I bet the basis of the Steele Dossier was a report of Bill Clinton's antics when he visited Russia to give his paid speech (Hilary got the report on Bill and just changed the name). Would any of us put it past him to have hookers piss on the bed Obummer slept in? We know where he was storing his cigars and it wasn't a standard humidor. 2. Without examining the server, who knows where the code came from. Every nation's intelligence agencies store developed, used, and improved upon spyware and malware that came from other countries, stockpiling it like the CDC does dangerous and deadly diseases. So having a bit of Russian code is no proof it came from Russia, it could have come from another company or other source. 3. Who else would hack the DNC? Off the top of my head, I would say Israel. I could see Netanyahu being a tad bit pissed at Obummer and the Dims for the way they tried to influence and meddle in the Israeli elections. Mossad would have used another countries code to get revenge on the Dims (look at how embarrassed the Dims were and Israel always gets revenge). If it was Israel, I would say bravo. If Obummer, the State Department, and Dims had left the Israeli election alone, there wouldn't have been a retaliation. Another suspect could be China, yet I doubt as China already owns the Clintons from when they funneled money to Bill's campaigns. All of this unfortunately began when Trump said well maybe Russia has Hilary's emails (now we know the FBI and DOJ was assisting in covering it up in any way possible and I wouldn't be surprised if they helped delete the most damaging emails). At this point in the investigation it appears the only collusion between Russia and Trump was an off hand comment by Trump on who may have all of Hilary's emails (Russians would already have them due to the uranium One deal).
