A little excitement yesterday in my sleepy one-horse town. A perp commandeered a green Corvette from a Chevy dealership and led cops on a multi-county chase that circled all the way back to San Jose.
A sergeant was shot. The perp was shot many more times, then one of the officers made a finishing move.

why do cops keep leaving doors open on their vehicles when they exit, seems like lunatics like this always try and take the cop car.
Nice job with the Explorer.

Most modern police cruisers have shift interlock devices that prevent the column from shifting unless you know what else you need to do.

That was a good ending. Since it is in California, is that police officer now going to be treated as a criminal for giving the perp a ride on his bumper?

Good police work.
I will assume an open door is good cover in a gun fight.

Generally, car doors are terrible cover. The engine block is the preferred cover

right, but if bullets are flying the jam of a car door is better than nothing right?
There is a reason you see it all the time.

Are police cruisers armored in any way? If it's got a cop motor, cop tires and cop shocks, it should have cop doors too.

There are ballistic inserts for patrol vehicle doors. But most departments wont buy them. They are pretty expensive.
The officer bailed on being a sitting duck, used the entire Explorer as cover, and stayed in the fight. Is that trained? Not the staying in the fight part, but the bailing and keeping the vehicle between you and the shooter.

I hope that cop pressure washed his tires before end of shift. It’s bad enough he left dents in his fender for someone to fix.

The last car played bumper car with the perp. Somehow I found that funny.
"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.
