Just saw my first one yesterday here in Eastern Iowa. The car did have a younger driver with "mom" in the passenger seat. I'm assuming an underage driver with a "learners permit" which are still issued here for 14 year olds before they get their license at 16. If I recall Iowa requires passing Drivers Ed to get a license at 16 or waiting until 18 if no class.

Thought it might be some kind of joke like slapping a rainbow flag on someone's car.

Go to Amazon and search "stude.." and the main hit is these stickers.

And this review answers the question:

And this review exemplifies the intelligence of these folks:

My daughter is 15 and has her leaners permit. She is VERY cautious and we slap one of these signs on the back of the car every time she drives. It gives her a peace of mind that people might be a little more patient with her.

Soem of you need to check your arrogance at the door. I have a child who had seizures and was not allowed to apply for his DL until he was an adult. Just because someone is older, doesn’t mean they aren’t a legitimate student driver.

As for why the need, have you seen how much road rage is going on now days? Perhaps a little sticker might prevent a serious accident by someone being an a$$ when they get behind a slower driver.

My son turned 15 in May and has his learners permit. Here in FL can be obtained at 15 by watching 4 hour video online that basically says don’t drink and drive and passing a pretty basic 50 question test at the DMV with 80%

I have a manual trans Tacoma. I told he must learn to drive it and he will be taking is license test on a manual trans.

No other driver Ed is required. No formal classroom setting no professional instructor with a car that has the extra brake pedal. Just hey good luck in your parents rig.

So here we are. Spent a few weeknights in a big empty parking lot learning how to get from a stop to 1st and 2nd. Without stalling the motor.

After a month of around town including stretches of the county roads that have a 55 mph limit we got on the I-10 interstate yesterday with a 70 limit. Kid had a death grip on the wheel and we stayed in the slow lane. I would love some of those “student driver” magnets for when he’s behind the wheel. Just to let people behind him know he didn’t cut them off with malice. He’s just a rookie driver. He gets so frustrated when people are riding his ass and he’s doing the limit.

I got my first ticket in almost a decade recently for doing 44 in a 35. So I have told him he needs to be careful to that and watch for speed limit changes. Even 5-10 over will get you popped here

Arrogance?

Where are you saying arrogance in this thread?

Just people like me asking why all of a sudden we are seeing these stickers everywhere when this was never a thing before?

I'll be arrogant, they annoy the hell out of my, half the cars around here have them. I see one I zoom around them to get away from them or I honk when I wouldn't normally in order to provide some additional training for them.

Local DC news video recording them.

“My theory is that people that drive slower than the posted limit put these on in hopes it keeps those of us that drive the actual speed limit off of their rear bumpers. I’m not a fan in any case.“

“ Many are too lazy/distracted/stupid to remove the sign when other-than-the-student-driver is using the car?”

“ That’s exactly what I am seeing. It’s not a woman who is old enough to have a 15-18 year old child, it’s an older person usually. Sometimes much older like senior citizen older.”

“ Meh, any angle to get the cops to not pull you over for driving like an ass...”

I don’t think ANY of us are speaking of your situation. Simmer down. A sticker won’t stop road rage.

I can see where the yellow student driver stickers could be a trigger for some of the road ragers who would think these vehicles should not be allowed on the roads getting in their way. ................................... drill sgt.

My theory is that people stay away from cars that have them. More often than not, I have seen many of these cars with adults driving them confidently but at or near the speed limit. I’m thinking this is possibly linked to gas economy with hopes that asshats in a hurry ignore them rather than target them for invective for “going slow”.

I was arrogant once,
Saw a suburban taking up two spaces in the parking lot.

I formed an opinion right then and there.
Ass ! I thought to myself.

Then the driver came out with his shopping cart,
Looked to be about ninty, in bib overalls.

He could walk/ shuffle
But had to have the cart for support.

I told him to go sit down I'd load his groceries.
.

He thanked me and told me he could do it.

I felt bad that he must not have someone to help him with his life.

I see poor parkers all the time in the doctor's parking lots.

Grandma's and grandpa's that have to go it alone and just do the best they can.

They used to drive for Yellow Freight...

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

I've been teaching my 17 year old daughter how to drive. She's a cautious driver that tries to drive the speed limit, or under. She slows down a little earlier than most drivers.

Every single time we go out we get tailgated by very aggressive drivers. Usually assholes in large trucks or douchebags in rice rockets.

If you're not driving well over the posted limits they ride you aggressively, sometimes honking and being complete dickheads. This, understandably, stresses my daughter out, which causes her to slow down. They'll often pass her in unsafe ways, in bad spots because they feel entitled to drive as fast as they want.

So we put a sticker on the car in hopes that there is some small measure of humanity and empathy in people, yet we're disappointed every day.

Keep in mind, we're just driving in neighborhoods where the speed limit is 30 to 45mph. Lots of stop signs, parked cars, kids on bikes, people walking, etc.. It's not like she's running 45 in the left lane on the interstate. And we still get majorly aggressive drivers being dickheads. Every day.

Meh. I’ll take a half-terrified, white knuckling student driver all day every day over the morons I see so many of lately with their heads so far up their cell phones that they have no idea what is going on around them.

I figured out a long time ago that the vast majority of drivers are not going to drive as I would like them to. Instead of worrying about what others are doing I focus on getting safely where I need to go. Sometimes that means going around, sometimes that means being patient. I try to remember that we all have different challenges and sometimes the person in the way is driving slowly because they’re old (or young and inexperienced) and that is as fast as they feel safe going.
