And guess what will happen when that decade is up? They’ll need to extend it again. Especially with all the electric cars coming online in the next ten years. They’ve got a much bigger problem than just one nuke. I read an article back in 2003 about California’s power problem that predicted what is happening now. ——————————————— The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Psalm 14:1

Unit 1 went on-line in 1985 and Unit 2 in 1986. At the high-end of the life-expectancy for safe and financially feasible operation at around 40 years or so, CA has fked themselves pretty hard up their arses on this. Maybe they’ll figure out a way to harness the energy of Unicorn Farts to keep their society from collapsing? __________ "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal labotomy."

If we were talking about someone more intelligent, knowledgeable and competent than Newsom it would be interesting to know what strings would be attached to the loan. As it is, it's just a vector for more mindless election stump nonsense to be inflicted on PG&E in the future.

The bolded above sounds like Cali is trying to re-invent nuclear energy as green.... Thus the metric system did not really catch on in the States, unless you count the increasing popularity of the nine-millimeter bullet. - Dave Barry "Never go through life saying 'I should have'..." - quote from the 9/11 Boatlift Story (thanks, sdy for posting it)

$1.4 Billion to extend it five, maybe ten years. So that’s $140,000,000 to possibly $280,000,000 per year. Just how much power does a nuke plant make? Do they make enough power to service such a loan? Demand not that events should happen as you wish; but wish them to happen as they do happen, and you will go on well. -Epictetus

At 2500 MW running 24/7, that's nearly 22 billion kwh/yr. So either at $140M to $280M loan won't be difficult to pay back (less than a penny a kwh). Of course, the loan cost (less than a penny/kwh) is added to the cost of production ($/kwh). My guess that the loan cost is feasible, all things considered. I'd love to see Diablo Canyon run for many years more and for San Onofre to come back online. P229

As a relatively close neighbor, I’d probably be better off if it had never been built. Still, I couldn’t get over the morons who were so anxious to shut it down. The waste isn’t ever going away. Gee, am I better off with it being a profit center for PG&E where they have every incentive to keep it running and making money or am I better off if it is shut down and is just a cost center. Which option is most likely to have the safety and security there closer to the top of their priority list? Apparently, some folks are unable to consider the world as it is and figure out how best to deal with that…

Not at all. Many nuke plants have gotten life extensions beyond 40 years. In 2003, St. Lucie Units 1 (1976) and Unit 2 (1983) had their licensee extended to 2036 and 2043. Both are still operating.
Diablo Canyon’s cooling water comes from the Pacific Ocean, so unless that dries up, they’ll be fine.

That depends. A lot of the impetus behind the shutdown decision was the Coastal Commission making noise about jerking their permit to use the ocean water for cooling. “Don’t you know they are warming the water in the cove and causing changes in the sea life.” The biggest risks to their ability to operate were always envirowhackos and idiot regulators…

https://www.upi.com/Top_News/U...award/6921669059585/ NOV. 21, 2022 / 3:06 PM Energy Dept. awards $1.1B to keep California nuclear plant running By Joe Fisher Nov. 21 (UPI) -- California's Diablo Canyon Power Plant will receive a $1.1 billion federal award to help enable the plant to keep providing nuclear energy. The award is funded by the bipartisan infrastructure law's Civil Nuclear Credit Program, which is investing $6 billion to maintain nuclear reactors across the country. The award was announced Monday by the U.S. Department of Energy. California Gov. Gavin Newsome has been an adamant supporter of clean energy initiatives in his state. He said the award will have a significant impact on keeping a major nuclear energy source online. "Amid intensifying climate impacts in the West and across the country, California is focused on meeting our bold climate and clean energy goals while tackling the challenges of extreme weather that puts lives at risk and strains our grid," Newsom said in a statement. "This investment creates a path forward for a limited-term extension of the Diablo Canyon Power Plant to support reliability statewide and provide an onramp for more clean energy projects to come online." Diablo Canyon was on the path to retirement when its licenses with Pacific Gas and Electric expire in 2024 and 2025. The plant generates about 15% of California's clean energy and supports 1,500 jobs. Like Newsom, President Joe Biden has held a steadfast focus on a shift toward renewable energy and limiting emissions. He set a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% below 2005 levels by 2030. He is also aiming for 100% clean electricity by 2035. "This is a critical step toward ensuring that our domestic nuclear fleet will continue providing reliable and affordable power to Americans as the nation's largest source of clean electricity," said U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm. "Nuclear energy will help us meet President Biden's climate goals, and with these historic investments in clean energy, we can protect these facilities and the communities they serve." According to the Department of Energy, nuclear power makes up about half of the United States' carbon-free electricity. Thirteen commercial nuclear reactors have closed since 2013. Each of which was a significant contributor to regional electricity, such as Fort Calhoun, which closed in 2016. The station, located near Omaha, was one of two plants responsible for generating about 26% of Nebraska's electricity. Nuclear reactors that are facing the "most imminent threat of closure" are being prioritized for Civil Nuclear Credit Program funding, the Department of Energy said.

How much of that will be sihoned off to political and personal pockets? I can’t remember, wasn’t there a nuclear reactor power plant on the coast by Carlsbad? .

Wait, what? |
So right after that asshole president of ours blathers all foamy at the mouth about shutting down fossil fuels and trying to force everyone into solar and wind generated power (a preposterous suggestion to anyone whose common sense overrides their political leanings), the lefts darling state that cannot POSSIBLY make ends meet with greenie madness quietly opts to extend nuclear? And continues to generate and/or import power made from fossil fuel sources? I’ve a better idea. Shut off all fossil fuel production and imports to show their resolve through virtue signaling and see how even that reduction affects their grid. But they won’t or can’t. Not for decades.
