So the XBOX ONE S is 4K streaming and an actual 4K (not upstreaming) Blu Ray unit.
For under $200 plus I can play some games from time to time.

How is it for a streaming device. Currently have a couple Roku and Amazon FireTV.

XBOX can be controlled with my Harmony remote. Any reason not to get the XBOX or does it suck as a streaming device?

I stream Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO, and Youtube all the time on my Xbox One S.

It's the media center for my "Man Cave". Games, Blu-Rays, and streaming.

Since my xbox one s can connect to my 5ghz router vs only 2.4 for my bluray player, it does stream better/download faster.

xbox 1 was built with "media center" in mind. It's one of the reasons it was so unpopular with gamers when it debuted. It's good for that.

The whole reason they named it Xbox One was because it was to function as One thing for everything. Connects your TV, gaming, movies and all your streaming choices in one handy media center.

I have basic cable ($10 on top of my internet bill) and run my cable box into the Xbox. Am able to watch all channels through it. Additionally I use the Xbox to stream Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, HBO, NHL, NBC Sports, Fox Sports and more. Also used to have Sling on it but decided to cut that as I wasn't watching it much.

So yeah, Xbox One is the perfect system for streaming practically anything you'd want to watch.

Any way to get local channels on the XBOX One without cable or satellite?

Can I hook an external hard drive up to it to play audio and video??
What formats? FLAC??

No FLAC, unless there's been an update I'm unaware of.

And there probably will be some video formats it won't play, though it does read mkv now.

Yes. However, the Xbox doesn't have an OTA TV antenna built in, nor the capability to accept a direct coaxial input from an OTA antenna. So you'll need a special digital tuner. http://www.hauppauge.com/site/...cts/data_xboxtv.html

Run the OTA TV antenna into that tuner, and then plug the tuner into the HDMI In port on the Xbox. See https://support.xbox.com/en-US...ries/over-the-air-tv

Yes, it has multiple USB ports for external HDs, along with an integrated media player app.

I use mine that way, too. It works well for the purpose.

Perfect is a stretch, as there are various codecs it isn't compatible with (FLAC being one).

But it does a fair enough job for an off the shelf gaming system.

I don't know why this did not click on my radar earlier.
I will no longer have to have multiple profiles on my harmony remote. Just click XBOX One and run everything from there.

Anyone know how WMA Lossless compares to FLAC.

Not that I really want to go converting all of my FLAC files.
