I know that MacArhur wrote his famous line of "Old soldiers never die they just fade away".
Peggy Noonan wrote many of Reagan's speeches and he delivered them well. Of course we all know that Lincoln wrote the Gettsyburg address. Huey P. was said to write his own speeches, and he delivered like no other.

Before he was president Reagan wrote most of his own speeches. He was very capable and reworked those written for him. Of course Lincoln was as well.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."
-- Justice Janice Rogers Brown

"The United States government is the largest criminal enterprise on earth."

I seem to recall that Nixon would give speeches without having any notes.

Probably none, which is why they have speechwriters. They simply have too many speeches to give to write each one. At some point they probably sit down with the speechwriter and edit them.
