My wife made me go see the doctor the other day for a check up (I guess you're not supposed to go more than thirty years with out one, I don't want to seem like a hypochondriac). Seems I have high blood pressure and evidence of a heart attack or two. Any body on these medications and pros and cons?

Hydrochlorothiazide

Metoprolol Tartrate

Was on Hydrochlorothiazide, HCTZ, for treatment of high blood pressure. Diuretic, so can make you urinate more frequently.
Also can lower your potassium levels, as can any diuretic. Low potassium can cause some heart issues, so they may want to check your potassium levels more frequently than every 30 years! Have no experience with the other one.
High blood pressure issues was solved another which do not recommend, commonly called a stroke, in the brain stem!
Particles broke loose during a cardiac catheterization, and one lodged in a vessel in my brain stem! Nothing found during the cardiac catheterization, so the stroke was a side effect. Darn side effects in any medicine makes you wonder about taking medicines casually, or just because! Roll Eyes

I was on Metoprolol for about a year after my heart attack. I had several side effects from it.

The least serious was my heart was pumping with such little force that I was cold all the time, especially in my extremities. My hands and feet would turn pale or blue.

The most serious was my short term memory was basically gone. eg. I would be getting ready to go somewhere. I would be holding something in my hand which I needed to take with me. I would set it down to put on my shoes. After I put on the shoes, I would leave without the item I needed. I was never like that before taking it and have not been like that since being off it.

My wife has been on Metoprolol for years for a rapid heart beat. No side effects as far as I know.
I've taken Lisinopril/HCTZ for HBP for the last 10 years, it works for me.

I’m allergic to side effects.

That’ll get ‘em racing for the books!

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

Just wanted to expand on this. Not "any" diuretic will lower your K+ level. The thiazide diuretics and the loop diuretics (like furosemide, aka Lasix), yes. But the potassium-sparing diuretics (like spironolactone), as the name implies, no.

Another thing about hydrochlorothiazide and furosemide that folks with gout need to be aware of is that they will raise you uric acid level. So, if you start to have more frequent gout attacks and your diet is unchanged, you know what the culprit is.

I was taking Lisinopril/HCTZ for HBP, for about a year. It worked well, and I am now on Lisinopril only. The HCTZ add-on was causing serious muscle cramping. I'm not talking leg cramps, but in the hands where my hands would practically curl the cramps were so bad. I got OJ and bananas to supplement my potassium intake after speaking with the doctor. If you start getting these symptoms talk to your Doctor IMMEDIATELY. If it is affecting the voluntary muscles like it did with me, it could be affecting the involuntary muscles like your heart.

I've been taking 50mg metoprolol post heart attack for going on 3 years. The only side effect I have is the chilling cold. Can't get warm. Could be blood thinners too. I will likely be on heart meds the rest of my life....but my Cardiologist says they will keep me alive Smile

Hydrochlorothiazide

I've been on low dose of this for about a decade.
As far as possible to evaluate subjectively, no side effects.

Lab blood work better now that "back then" too.

It does increase your urinary frequency.

I'm on a few different ones to include metoprolol. Haven't noticed anything different, but then again I thought I was feeling pretty good the day I had my heart attack. Don't read the small print, drink lots of water (to flush out your liver and kidneys). Go to your Dr. and get regular blood work, they will let you know if something is up --- well I hope they do. Go on with life...

And check your blood pressure regularly, Tuckerrnr1. Preferably throughout the morning, afternoon and evening.

That'll give a good idea on how it's working. Or if it is not working as it should.

I've been on Valsartan (HCTZ) for about 9 months now.

It's supposed to lower blood pressure and soften the arteries.

Blood pressure went from mid 140s to mid 120s in less than a week.

I've been on HCTZ for years as one of my meds for high blood pressure. As previously noted, the diuretic part is the only side affect i really contend with. Then this year Metoprolol was added when I was diagnosed with Premature Ventricular Contractions(originally my doctor was concerned with A-fib). With the addition of the Metoprolol, I really haven't noticed any additional side effects.

I have noticed some lower leg cramping, which I have attributed to the statin I have been also taking....

Thats the fact jack, My Doc put me on a new HBP and I had my first attack of Gout, on an airplane going out of town. That continued for a bit until I found out the pill was causing the gout. Changed meds and no more gout, blood tests show Uric acid now at normal levels.

I've been taking 25mg of Metoprolol daily for several years. Recently I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation and the dosage was increased to 50mg twice a day. I also take Furosemide ("Lasix") to counter swelling in my lower legs, and have done so for years. When the Lasix dosage was recently increased my doctor changed my Potassium intake to 4 capsules a day. I have blood work done about every 3 months to keep a check on how things are going (3 different doctors--General Practitioner, Cardiologist, and Nephrologist--and a Diabetes treatment regimen keep checking on it).

Tucker, consider asking for a referral to a cardiologist to confirm whether you have actually had a heart attack, and assess future risk. The medications are OK, but hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) should not be taken if you are not going to have periodic testing of your potassium and kidney function. It is a good blood pressure drug, especially when used with another drug such as metoprolol or lisinopril.
So my professional recommendation to you (as you might expect coming from a cardiologist) is: see a cardiologist.
