First Amendment

You can tell me how this doesn't apply because of yadda yadda and I will say to you

First Amendment

I don't need to be a lawyer to interpret this.

What's next, Colorado? Good grief.

Recent history has taught us that totalitarian regimes all do the same thing in the beginning: Start small, and then incrementally suppress rights "in the name of public safety."

Perhaps someone there will have the courage to file the First Amendment civil rights lawsuit.

Shane Fuhrman, mayor of the 550-person town of Silverton, announced his decision during a trustee meeting last week, saying the pledge has led to threats and divided the community, KDVR reported

Small-minded putz from a small town trying to act big and tough.

Big whoop.

This is the absolute pinnacle of this dude's political career. He will be gone from the public consciousness like the proverbial fart in the wind.

Because this country provides for them. Life in the United States is relatively easy, compared with, say Venezuela or Siberia or some of the Middle East countries that hate us.

Why leave a place that helps you even when you show your disgust for it?

If they were truly committed to their hatred for the United States, they'd actually get off their tails and put forth the effort required just to even survive in some other America-hating country.

But they're not. They're catered to, smothered in attention, and soaking up every bit of it.

God bless America.

Seems he divided the community deeper and created more discord than before.....of course that was a straw man argument.

From a Feb '21 article in the Colorado Sun, this Mayor Fuhrman is a NYC transplant who moved there about 5 yrs ago. Funny reading about his NYC professional past. Was a lawyer for Murphy Bova, some bigwig law firm that entrepreneurs, startups and growth-hungry businesses hire as a consultant in developing market and growth business strategies. Doesn't ring like an anti-American. Perhaps Fuhrman found his "hippy-ness" when he decided Colorado was his future. Or he's up to something else...

The article did hint that there's quite a bit of animosity between the 60 and over population of this town, which happens to be the largest demographic of Silverton (pop. 460), and Fuhrman's age group (30-40somethings), who are now the fastest growing demographic. His next door neighbor was his opponent in the mayoral race; apparently there is a lot of venom between the two that didn't subside when the election was called, which Fuhrman won by only 10 votes.

After reading this article, to me this seems like a small-town soap opera. Neighbor hating neighbor; generation hating generation. Old industry (mining) vs new entrepreneurial investments (ski resorts, tourism...which Fuhrman apparently wants). The more I read the article, the more I think this 'ban' was an ill-conceived prod to piss off the old-timers. Because that's what headstrong kiddies who have delusions of grandeur and power do. Especially when they're from New York City.

Link: How Divided is Silverton? (warning: the Sun does try to get the page visitor to sign up; I just closed and reloaded the page in my Brave browser and I got to read the article without anymore nagging about paying for a subscription. YMMV)

I like Silverton, a lot actually. I usually go to Durango every summer, used to go in the winter every year to snow ski.

Silverton is a quick easy drive up Hwy 550, the Million Dollar Mile Highway.

If you ride the train from Durango you end up in Silverton.

It's about 48 miles by car.

Screw Silverton. You can keep right on going through Silverton and go to Ouray. Ouray is a fantastic nice and decent town that appreciates the tourists dollars.

If it weren't for tourists spending money in Silverton it'd be just another dried up wasted town, one foot in the grave and the other foot on a banana peel.

About a month ago those morons in Silverton decided to band ATV's, those side by sides, OHV's etc.

Idjits! Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.

Went over like a lead balloon.

I have not had time to follow up on this but I think it has not taken effect yet.

Sounds like this moron mayor is just another unhappy bitchy little tyrant, about the same as most other liberals.

Fuck'em.

The ban was quickly repealed. I heard they voted to ban OHVs based off of a single complaint. Well, they got a flood of bitching about lost tourist revenue and we can ride in the city again.

Colorado resident most of my 70-plus years. Taxpayer. Property owner. City cop. State investigator. Police chief. Retired, started a business, paid a lot more taxes, employed a dozen people.

I don't recognize my home state anymore. The best analogy I can offer is a governor who is ready to go anywhere at any time to do whatever needs to be done, and has a domestic partner who helps him keep his shit packed.

Mr. Mayor: As a retired disabled Vietnam combat veteran I would welcome your attempts to try and keep me from reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, publicly or privately, in any venue. I will bring a 5-gallon bucket of coarse sand and a 3-lb. sledge hammer for you to use as you sit in the corner and pound it up your ass.

Lobo,
Right there with you. I served 24 years in the Navy, and 20 years civil service with an alphabet agency.

I am so disheartened I am ready to move from Colorado. Our family settled in Stratton in July 1886. My sister has already moved out of Colorado. I hate to think about leaving, but it seems like EVERY DAY HRH Polis signs some bill to make us more and more like California. I saw it coming, but people thought it was a light at the end of the tunnel. I thought it was a freight train. I was right.

What the hell is in the water in Silverton?

An old mining town in SW Colorado, what's drawing-in these clowns? Denver & Boulder sure major metro-areas with universities, and Durango & Telluride I can understand, with high-end ski tourism and the associated services they attract but, what is drawing idiots like this mayor to this remote corner of the state? Out here on the Left Coast, the Lefties stick to the coast or, those destination areas in the mountains, otherwise, rural CA, OR, WA and others, are heavily Red, Right and don't take too kindly to anti-American types running their mouths.

Fuck a bunch of douchebag transplants ruining my home state. I'm so damned sick of it I could just barf. Boulder and Denver are lost and now the Western slope is under attack. The governor is an idiot, signed three new gun laws just this week. Then this pledge incident shows what electing these assholes is doing to this great state.

I love Colorado with all my heart and hate to think about moving away. It tears me up seeing these people from the East and West coast doing this bullshit.

Happening ALL over the West, not a new thing. Now you know how the NA's felt when the white eyes took over. Silverton belongs in Cali. oh wait, Colorado is the new Cali. (has been, started with Boulder). There are no 'sanctuaries', just misguided emigrants looking for a mythical paradise!
