Did not say a word. I have backed out of his driveway 5000 times and never hit anything. After being there for a few hours it was time to go home. I backed in to his 20 year old Toyota Tundra which received significant damage. I had no idea he had parked it there. My rig sustained some damage but nothing compared to his. I own the home. We both only have liability Ins. I realize I hit him. We both have state farm insurance. Any thoughts on how to proceed other than just call it in on my liability policy. Which I prefer not to do. My Home owners policy? Thanks guys. "Practice like you want to play in the game"

Not an HO claim it's a vehicle claim, you backed into him so let him claim against your insurance, that way zero deductible on the repair. Shit happens, My older truck doesn't have the sensors, did end up putting a camera on the back since so many people will just walk behind a moving vehicle in order to hit the ghetto lottery...

Insurance or cut him a check. "The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people." "Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy." "I did," said Ford, "it is." "So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?" "It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want." "You mean they actually vote for the lizards." "Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course." "But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?" "Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

They won't bother repairing it, it's prob too old, the cost to repair far outweighs the book value of the car. If you file it it may pay less than the repair based on the book value, and you can keep it or junk it depending on how you work it out with the insurance company. They they will raise your rates naturally. My next vehicle will have to have collision sensors for sure, and a backup camera. I did that with an old car very early in my life, a kid sideswiped me, his insurance paid me blue book less $1, and I kept driving the damn thing. Then it happened again with another car when someone pulled out in front of me, their insurance paid me book value and I kept it and drove it around until I replaced it then junked it. I wouldn't file it unless you needed to. Lover of the US Constitution Wile E. Coyote School of DIY Disaster

Note that State Farm has an accident forgiveness policy. If you have had no at fault claims for a certain number of years, the first one doesn't affect your premium. On my vehicle policy it is 9 years, but it may vary by state or by policy. Worth looking into as part of the decision whether to file a claim or not.

Would it be worse if you'd backed into your own vehicle that you forgot you had parked there? Asking for a friend.... ![]() God bless America.

I parked behind my mother's car once because of limited parking. First thing I did when I went in the house was to inform her I had to park behind her. One hour later she backs into my car. _________________________

I wouldn't bring in the insurance policy. It's not like he'll sue you. You're going to end up paying for it anyway. You either pay him directly or go through your insurance and you'll pay with interest through your premium increases forever, if not immediately, then later. there's no such thing as a free lunch. That's how I see it. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." My mother in law lives out in the country, has a large gravel/yard area she backs out of the garage and turns around in to drive out onto the county road facing forwards. We are in a big black Suburban, it is the middle of the day. We had parked in the driveway and backed and turned waiting for her to back out and we would follow her. She thought we had already left and backed out of the garage and starts her 90 degree backing turn and I thought she would pull next to us and then pull forward and turn left 90 degrees to complete her 180 but she aims directly for us. I see what she's doing and throw it into reverse and lay on the horn but I only had so much room to back up and she kerplunks right into our front bumper. Luckily the damage was pretty minor, about $1,000, I ended up not doing anything about it. I mean...it was my mother in law...

We park our Suburban in the garage. One day I went out and got in it to go somewhere, and used the remote to open the garage door after I got into the Suburban. Unbeknownst to me, my wife had parked the Mazda 3 directly behind the Suburban outside the garage. That car is small enough, and she parked it close enough, that you couldn't see it in any of the mirrors on the Suburban. The car still has a "buck tooth" from where the hitch receiver on the back of the Suburban impacted the front bumper of the Mazda. Thankfully I was going pretty slow and felt it immediately, so the damage was only cosmetic.

I think you would be better off not involving the insurance, in my state State Farm does not have an accident forgiveness policy but yours could. You could check, but still I wouldn't trust them not to raise your rate. "But, as luck would have it, he stood up. He caught that chunk of lead." Tell him it’s his fault… ![]() "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown "The United States government is the largest criminal enterprise on earth." -rduckwor

Sorry about the unfortunate accident. It’s kinda like when out cutting firewood, never set the chainsaw down where someone can run or back over it. Years ago similar happened here, sister parked behind me, luckily minimal damage.

For those saying don't "involve" the insurance, what have you been paying for all this time? (other than required by law) Do the math on how much (if any, if you have accident forgiveness) your rate would go up vs. the amount of damage. A fender, door or bed dent that might cost a couple of hundred? Or did it cave in doors so they can't be opened or closed, bend fenders against the tires or other major damage? (At that point, being 20 years old, it might be considered a total loss, so figure that into your calculation.) I suspect the math is going to favor using your insurance.

Many policies don't cover family members who hit each other, it may be limited to those who live in your own home. You need to check your policy carefully for this exclusion before making a claim. If you're part of the same household generally it's not covered if you hit one vehicle with another. If his father lives elsewhere and is on his own policy it should cover it.
