Something compact for home defense but still able to punch paper at 75/100 yards. Must be fairly compact, think there is no arm brace required in Florida so collapsing stock ok. Over penetration might be a concern.M4?,CZ Scorpion?

Perhaps a Kel-Tec RDB:

Not bad for a rifle with a 17" barrel, having an OAL of a little over 27".

You don't say anything about a price range but pretty tough to beat a decent AR.

The 16-inch-barreled, collapsible stock AR rifles sometimes called "M4geries" ought to be fine. The Ruger and Smith & Wesson Sport are good "budget" ones. I don't believe you can put an actual buttstock on the Scorpion - classified as a pistol - without violating NFA.

How much does he want to spend? Barrel length? if under 16 inches with a regular stock that's a NFA item, but arm brace ok. This is what I turned my cousin on to. He loves it. So does his wife. $519 shipped to his FFL.

Scorpion comes in pistol or carbine model.
Magpul now offers parts for Scorpion including mags--35 rounders.
Scorpion is pistol calber--like an HK MP5 , with good support for accessories and modifications.

AR15 pistol. Put a LAW adapter folder on the thing and it will fold in half and can be hidden in a backpack.

When I was looking at a similar decision, personally wasn't worried about overpen, but did want a decent barrel length for accuracy with a short overall length, but without any SBR overhead.

That led me to bullpup designs, and eventually after considering both the Steyr AUG and the FN PS 90, I went with the PS 90. Cost was a factor in that decision - both were/are very good rifles, IMO.

Already had and liked the FN Five seveN, and as I say overpen was not a criteria, so the caliber thing wasn't an issue for me. 50 rounds in a magazine does a lot to calm potential quavering over the caliber issue, as well.

When someone says "doomsday weapon" I think either a V2, or something in a more common caliber.

Is it still legal to put a wrist brace up to your shoulder and use it as a buttstock? IIRC they have flip-flopped a couple of times on this issue. And would ejected cases hit you in the face?

Right. I forget not everyone rolls their own ammo. I do like the versatility of 300blk though.

If he could afford it. A Scar 17 would be the best DD weapon one could have imho. And a ton of mags.

AR pistol, at least a 10 inch barrel and an arm brace. It’s perfectly legal.
Over penetration is less likely with 5.56 as it is with 9mm. That’s why swat teams/patrol cops mostly all have AR’s vs the MP5 in their trunk.

I myself have a tavor X95 but I didn’t care much about cost as this was to be my go to fighting rifle for shtf/hd do-all gun.
If he really wants something in 9mm a scorpion or AR pistol in 9mm with brace would be nice but I’d still steer him to 5.56

Last I heard, the current advisement from the ATF was that it was okay. I also question how much authority the ATF has in determining how a weapon that is legal to own is used. I haven't seen anything in the NFA that gives them the authority to regulate use.

On the flip side, do you want to be the test case?

Want a short handy carbine with no legal issues? Are you willing to spend some money on it? Try this.

IWI X95. Unquestionably a legal under Federal law. Full 16" barrel. Same or shorter overall length as 10.5" AR.

I have the Freedom Ordnance FX9. (9mm)
Barrel is 8.5 inches. Higly reliable and accurate.
When stock is collapsed its still handy to actually shoulder. Out on my desert I've ran thousands of rounds using the 32 round magazine.
(Comes with it)
It's small enough to be a truck gun.
At about $600 its mil-spec and I've preferred it to
those $1000+ ones.
My nephew and grandson both have one too____thousands of rounds in each now.

For a true doomsday weapon a 12ga pump has some advantages too. 50 state legal, wide variety of ammo choices, ammo available everywhere, even those mass merchandisers we love to hate but in a pinch it is there. With a folding stock near as compact as the 10” AR without the legal questions or lack of legality in a number of states
