Phone Locking - Do You Lock Yours?
Right or wrong I’ve got too much going on in my phone to not lock it.

18 months ago it was stolen. Locked everything down and worried about security for a couple months. SOB’s contacted me generously offering to clear the memory before sending it to China to be auctioned off to professional grade hackers…

It was at this point I offered to unlock it for them if they provided me with $500 in Walmart gift cards. They were kind enough to give me step by step instructions of exactly what Apple tells you to never do.

I worry where pickpocketing crime is high, such as tourist destinations. Especially in Europe. Phones are a common target, either pickpocketed or grabbed from a restaurant table. In Europe I use a lanyard to further secure my phone.

Normally around where I live, I don't worry at all about theft.

Lock it every time.
No face unlock.

What sort of lanyard? I.e., how is it attached?

Just last week I unlocked my iPhones, and my iPad.

I had always had them on lock. My sister asked me why, so I did some reflection. I realized that my need to make a call quickly in the event of a medical emergency outweighs my need to keep it locked. I really have no need to keep it locked now that I no longer leave the house.

Day one:
I accidentally called someone. They said that they were worried when I did not respond to their "Hello".

There have been no further incidents.

BTW, you will want to make one change to an iPhone in case someone swipes it.

Right now, most phones allow access to the Control Center from the lock screen by swiping down from the right top of the screen. This gives access to put the phone into airplane mode and can turn off both cellular and WiFi. If this is done by someone, you no longer have the ability to remotely track or wipe the phone (this does assume you have your phone backed up to iCloud so you can restore to a replacement).

Removing that ability keeps the phone locked and unusable to a thief.

From the Apple support forums:

To disable the Control Center on your iPhone lock screen
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode on older models).
- Enter your lock screen passcode.
- Scroll down to the Allow Access When Locked section.
- Toggle the switch for Control Center to the OFF position.

This will immediately prevent anyone from accessing quick settings (like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or Airplane Mode) or turning off your cellular network without unlocking the device.

Yes, I lock my phone. Or, I should say it locks itself.

That said, I know people who dont lock their homes and leave their keys in the vehicles. Im not them, but I know them...

Outstanding! Than you!

One can also just remove the one section from the Control Center that has airplane mode and wifi toggles. Unlock your phone, them swipe down from the top right to access Control Center. Then tap the + at the top left. Now you can tap the - on the corner of the box that holds Airplane Mode and Wifi toggles.

My wife says this removes her most needed convenience, and it probably is for me too other than maybe the flashlight function without unlocking the phone. A worth while inconvenience to live with.

Or switch to back tap.

Settings -> Accessibility-> Touch -> Back Tap and then assign a function.

Our entire lives are wrapped up in our phones these days. How much do you care about the info on your phone?

I took Cellebrite courses back in 2016 and have seen more lately what Magnet Forensics GreyKey can do.

If us in the law enforcement world can get get into your phone in clean and lawful way, I know criminals can do the same to access/steal your info.

I make sure to do have the most complex password possible combined with FaceID. Just as important, I make sure to keep the software as up to date as possible. The moment an update is released it's guaranteed hundreds (if not thousands) of people are trying to figure out how to exploit it.

An interesting comment that explains a lot.
It certainly is not true of everyone, and it is even less true that everyone has information of even low level importance on their phones, much less anything critical.

If my phone were lost or destroyed it would be an inconvenience because I would have to go to the phone store to buy another. As for photos, every one that matters to me is on my computer and backed up on flash drives. Phone contacts? I could do without 90%, and easily replace the ones that matter. I have some apps I use and could be replaced in probably 30 minutes or so, including trying to remember which ones I use.

But my condolences to anyone who is forced by modern life to be a slave to the devices. It is difficult for me to understand why that would be, but I will accept that it must be true.

I have to use my phone at work to unlock the computer. I leave it on my desk during the day. So I lock it so nobody messes with it or logs into my work computer.
