I think the weather is starting to get better now. And I need a vacation (maybe 1 week).

I've got the LX itching to take its first trip (but no kayaks yet, just mountain bikes). And still wearing street shoes (Cooper Discovery HT+) but am looking for destinations where a 4x4 would be beneficial.

I'm not looking to go where no man has gone before. Looking for nice places (especially near water) where it's off the beaten path and good to be in a 4x4 that doesn't put the car or passengers at risk. Smile

Easy mountain biking, easy hiking, maybe kayaking (if I can get it in time). Nice natural / scenic views. Never been but imagining things like Zion. Bryce. Other places.

So summary: any recommendations for taking a trip where a AWD LX is necessary but doesn't pose risk to vehicle or person? Someplace to enjoy nature, easy biking and hiking (we're old) and maybe kayaking? In the mentioned states in the title (ie - < 1 day drive). Oh, and clean lodging. I don't do tents. Smile

If konata is thinking of going off-road in street tires, maybe Moab isn't the place to do it?

Moab looks interesting -- actually too much information. I'm going to need to spend some time going through it. But seems like it offers some off-road venues for novice hikng / biking / kayaking.

If I need different tires to really enjoy it, please let me know. Prefer not but I'm open to it. I'd prefer to defer costs if possible. But Moab is far so it's probably going to be a rare-ish trip; will want to make the most of it if we go.

Can I rent kayaks there or is it better to bring your own? I'd prefer to rent at this point (buying 2 kayaks ($2000) and the rack stuff ($2000) to support is costly). Would prefer to defer that a bit more if possible. Especially if kayaking there is just a day thing (other days better spent off road enjoying the sights, or biking / hiking).

I think I saw a mention of White Rim while searching for Moab. I'll check it out.

I'll look up Four Corners (Moab area too?).

ETA: these are basically the tires I have on now (in 285/50/20).

Death Valley. If you can make an exception for the kayaking. Big Grin Although it was rough in spots, I went out to The The Racetrack in a 2wd pickup. Higher elevation areas of the park like this are cool to cold (at night) this time of year. More Death Valley images

Sedona. It's mini Moab for off-road. Flagstaff, Cottonwood, Jerome and Prescott are all a short distance away for alternate activities.

Moab! Fruita/Grand junction Colorado is about an hour away from Moab and it has some great biking and hiking. Great hospital as well should you have a bad day in Moab.

Thanks guys. Some quick searching and I think we’re hooked on the Lake Powell / Moab area.

How about specific suggestions for someone with weak knees:
1) where to spend a day of hiking.
2) where to spend a day of kayaking
3) where to spend a day of biking.

We’re probably limited to 3 days. We’ll do some combination of the above, including doing something like 3 days of hiking / walking if that’s the thing to do there (for example). I’m overwhelmed with choices in the area. Some personal recommendations would be good.

Again, elderly with weak knees (distance okay but no jumping up/down rocks). Need clean lodging. LX on street tires. Have bikes. Would need to rent kayaks.

You do realize Moab and Lake Powell are about a 4 hour drive away from each other?

Also what time of year are you planning on going? Both Moab and Lake Powell can get brutally hot during the summer months and we're getting close to that...

Thanks. Yea. I’m thinking I could do, for example, 1 day in Moab (Arches?) and then 2 days in Lake Powell (hiking, kayak). Basically whatever is recommended. Prefer to stay in one location to minimize travel time. So could spend all 3 days in Moab or Powell. Both sound so interesting.

Shooting for May.
