I live in the city in an apartment. I work in an office. I don't "need" a truck.
Right now I have a Corolla and a Mustang GT 5.0. Having to pay for two car insurance, maintenance, finding place to park 'em, etc. sucks.

I always loved driving my girlfriend's Dakota 4WD truck before she retired it. I loved the way it sat up higher. I love the few times I needed it, having that utility. I loved when I wanted to shoot off road, we'd go off a dusty trail. I loved being able to throw anything in the back.

Admittedly, the opportunities to use it as a truck are few and far in between. But I still really like them, and want one.
Is that weird?

Something like an F150 is too big for my city parking wise. A Tacoma or Colorado will be the same width as my Mustang, and only 24" longer. It seems to fit anywhere most cars fit.

I test drove a Tacoma. I love the TRD Off Road. Sadly the problem I had was it was gutless, even compared to my Corolla. My Corolla breezes up hills, the Tacoma struggled. The Colorado is much quicker, but I don't have the same faith in GM's quality though it will be much cheaper.

Anybody have any input on either?

I am not a current Tac guy. I just don't care where they have taken it. Way to expensive for what it is too.

I would look at the Colorado hard. I am not too familiar with them but they seem to have come a long way in recent years.

I would also look at the Nissan Truck. Possibly the best of the bunch.

I had a Taco for awhile. It was not an exhilarating ride, but it was nearly indestructible. It had some rust issues (in fairness, it spent a lot of time around and some time IN saltwater before I got it), but my father in law is still using it to this day.

The new "small" trucks are pretty much the same size as the full size trucks from not that long ago. I drive a Silverado right now, but I'm going to look hard at the new Ranger after it's been out long enough to establish reliability. I'm not towing the Space Shuttle, I just need something I can fit motorcycle parts in and haul a couple bags of garbage from time to time.

Ford is bringing back the Ranger starting with the 2019 model year. That may be something worth looking at, too. It’s a sharp looking rig. I’m

We went from an F150 4x4 to a New Honda Ridgeline. No regrets, we originally were looking at the Tacoma but frankly too much $$ for too little on an older design. Ridgeline can carry same weight in bed as my F150, it just tow half the weight.

As you shop something to consider.

My 2018 TRD Off Road has more than enough power.
If I had it to do over again I'd buy the Toyota.

Fox News article today stated Colorado Crew Cabs (2018's) were being discounted up to $9100 currently.

F-150

Honestly the current line of smaller trucks is not that much smaller, not that much cheaper, and don't get any better gas mileage.

I have a '17 SuperCrew Lariat RWD I have zero issues parking in garages or just about anywhere. I've owned a Tacoma and a Sierra in the past.

I have driven the Colorado and it may be my next truck.
Problem:
The cost difference between Colorado and Silverado is minimal. Which to me, makes no sense. Why pay the same amount of $$$ for a truck that is smaller?
Which I think is why you see so many Silverados on the roads as compared to the Colorado.

Get the V-6, it has more than enough power, especially if you turn on the ECT. I have zero regrets on purchasing my 2016 Taco TRD-OR.

I would not even consider a truck with a 4cyl. I suspect that was the problem with the Taco you test drove. The V6 is where it’s at. Toyota is king of the hill when it comes to aftermarket parts/upgrades as well.

Tacoma. Does it really matter if it costs more when they hold their value so well?

GM is junk compared to Toyota. Sorry, just the truth.

I bought my Ridgeline new in 2008. I've been ready to trade for 5 years but there is nothing I'd rather have.

The last time my bride’s 2017 Silverado was in the shop for warranty work, we were given a fairly fancy new Crew Cab Colorado for a loaner. We drove it a few hundred miles (home and back from the dealership in another town) and both of us thought it was pretty uncomfortable. Little seats and a bouncy ride. And, for me, the cab was uncomfortably narrow. I am a “husky” guy, 6’3” and 275.

The Colorado got only 1 or 2mpg more than her much more capable Silverado Crew Cab with a 5.3 V-8 does, too.

I know your primary motivation for considering a smaller truck is size related, but thought I’d share my recent experience with the Colorado.

I'm also thinking my next vehicle may be a truck. But as others have said, today "small" trucks are practically the same size as the full size models. 99% of the time it's only me driving and I never have a need to tow anything.

I have a 4WD 4 cylinder Tacoma with a 4 speed auto trans. It's a great little truck, but next time will get a V6. Gas mileage is about the same if you get 4WD and the 4 has to work hard going up hills. On the freeway, no problems, but I never tow a trailer and don't need to prove anything to the daredevils out there.

I paid 24k in '09 for a Taco 4 banger with a stick. 9 years later I sold it for 15k. Just a thought.
