Even with the "full" self driving package now available in beta form, Tesla admitted to state regulators that it is still a Level 2 system. To date, Honda has sold in very limited numbers, a certified Level 3 car. GM Cruise and Google Waymo is Level 4, both achieving roughly around 30,000 miles per disengagement in mostly city driving, with latest reports. I don't think Tesla can drive a few miles in city without disengaging at this time.

That’s true. Perhaps a better analogy would be an ALS landing vs a manual landing? My brother, a commercial pilot, has said the same thing about the tolerance for error in a semi truck being much lower than in an aircraft. It takes only a second to be upside down in a truck. Demand not that events should happen as you wish; but wish them to happen as they do happen, and you will go on well. -Epictetus

Notice how cleverly the writer of this article inserted his admiration for Mr. Biden and his contempt for Mr. Trump. During the early days of aviation the US Mail was carried on privately-contracted airplanes with civilian pilots. When plane crashes and other incidents interfered with Air Mail services our government stepped in with US Army Air Corps aircraft and pilots to make the system work, and radio-beacon navigation systems were installed nationwide. I don't remember any criticism of former presidents for lack of foresight in dealing with the new technologies. Retired holster maker. Retired police chief. Agreed. It’s rampant here. I’d say 50% or more are now surfing when they drive. I’m even seeing CDL folks surf while driving a company truck, van, etc. I’m getting real tempted to start phoning it in and getting someone fired. Only problem is I’d also have to hold a phone when I drive and film their dumb asses endangering myself, which I’m unwilling to do. They are got damn crack addicts with the phones. They can’t put it down while they drive, and you ought to see my gym. Everyone in there is on the phone except those few of us there to pound weight, get our workout in and GTFO. I’m sick of it. Lock these fuckers up and let them have a date with Bubba. What am I doing? I'm talking to an empty telephone

It only needs to be safer than a human driver to be better. We're killing 35,000 to 40,000 people a year in traffic crashes. Hundreds of thousands injured. Billions in property damage. Four people die in a traffic crash every hour, but every single time a Tesla is in a crash, that is news.

The human in the vehicle, autopilot equipped or not is still and rightly should still be the responsible party in any accident. Just like the pilot of an aircraft, the driver of an automobile should be considered the pilot in command and is responsible for everything occurring aboard that vehicle and for the safe operation of said vehicle, including frequent monitoring of any automation to make sure its doing what it's supposed to be doing. ------------- $

Sandman is correct, but unfortunately the judicial system does not see it that way. Sandman draws a parallel, aircraft pilots and vehicle drivers. If a pilot screws up, the FAA takes action. I, as an instructor, have been involved with a few of these, where the pilot came to me for remedial instruction mandated by the feds. After giving the required instruction, I then had to write a letter to the FAA describing the instruction that I had given. Vehicle drivers, on the other hand, seem to be treated differently by the court system: "Fifty dollar fine, and don't do that again. Call the next case." הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

safe & sound |
That's because the FAA is a regulatory agency designed to promote safety. A lot of traffic enforcement is a tax revenue system.

That’s the *ONLY* kind that they put in airplanes. The purpose of autopilot is to offload the mundane task of operating the controls so the pilot is able to focus on the big picture. No remotely competent pilot thinks that autopilot allows them to stop paying attention.

Ignored facts still exist |
Bingo. The news is made to get people's attention, otherwise they cease to exist. For some reason a "robot driven car" as opposed to a "human driven car" gets attention. It's only a matter of time until you see a paid advertising blitz which shows staged situations where the the "robot car" SAVED a life. .

The mistake is Tesla calling it Autopilot. There is an assumption/stereotype that its a set it and forget it feature. If it was called driving assist it would not get nearly the attention. A family member has a Tesla and was showing me all the cameras built inside the cabin to monitor the occupants. I wonder if Telsa can see what the driver was doing when the crash occurred.

Why? What function do the cameras provide? "Wrong does not cease to be wrong because the majority share in it." L.Tolstoy "A government is just a body of people, usually, notably, ungoverned." Shepherd Book

Tesla AutoPilot, helping horny drivers and their passengers get home satisfied and safely... Link Sex in a Tesla Article Link is safe no "video" you'll have to google that yourself... As to AutoDrive I'm reminded of the scene in Red October where Ramius is changing speed as they run the canyons past THors Twins. Kamarov: Stop pissing, Yuri. Give me a stopwatch and a map, and I'll fly the Alps in a plane with no windows. Yuri (Diving Officer): If the map is accurate enough.

From what he explained to me it was for future technology expansion. He was not sure if they recorded and if so where the data went and how its used. He mentioned about Telsa taking used vehicles as prototypes for Tesla self driving taxi.

Don't bother thinking about how your asinine behavior might affect other people on a public road, stupid bitch. _________________________________________________________________________ “A man’s treatment of a dog is no indication of the man’s nature, but his treatment of a cat is. Not really. Most people feel they are better than the average driver so I know for a fact that I'm not giving up control of my car when it's just a little better than what we currently have. It has to be measurably better so much so that the manufacturers would have to be liable. Otherwise I'm paying attention like I'm driving.
