Please clarify. Are you saying murders equal deaths by all other causes, or what?

THe way I interpret it is that this appears to be saying that 0.6% of all deaths are murders. Within murders, 0.5% are from mass shootings. You could do the math and say that 0.6%*0.5%, of all deaths are from mass shootings. But, not my chart. --K

reads that .6% of deaths in America are murders, and of the .5% of that .6% is mass murders, in other words, a very small percentage https://chandlersfirearms.com/chesterfield-armament/

So given 3,000,000** deaths in 2017... Deaths by Murder - 3,000,000 x 0.006 = 18,000 (49.315 murders per day, just as a factoid for later reference) Deaths by Mass Murder - 18,000 x 0.005 = 90 Percentage of death by Mass Murder to total deaths - 90 / 3,000,000 = 0.003% Hang on while I call Sheldon and Leonard to check my math. If we use the actual number of 17,284 deaths by murder, the death total and percentage by mass murder would be 86.42 and 0.002999%, respectively. According to just one source I found in a quick search, asirt.org states there are 3,287 deaths per day in the U.S. due to automobile accidents. I'd say the automobile is a MUCH more dangerous weapon than the "military style rifle". Which, in using that term, just causes me to do this... ** I rounded up total deaths to 3,000,000. Backing into the math, the actual number is 2,880,667 (17,284 / 0.006) "If you’re a leader, you lead the way. Not just on the easy ones; you take the tough ones too…” – MAJ Richard D. Mass casualty events - spree shootings, terrorist attacks, airline crashes - generate disproportionate attention because they are by definition extraordinary. That's human nature. Also, fates are neatly concentrated and can be easily covered and politicized, even if they are just a blip against regular numbers of unnatural deaths. 117 people were killed in mass shootings in the record year of 2017 in the US, 85 of which in three incidents in Las Vegas and Texas. 151 were killed in terrorist attacks in the record year of 2015 in Europe, 146 of which in the three Paris incidents. 791 were killed in airline crashes in 2018/19, 346 of which in the two Boeing 737 Max incidents. You are still more likely to win the lottery than dying in any such event. But if a few extraordinary events can be linked by a common theme, there will be calls to "do something" and "stop it". Of course lessons should be learned from such events to improve security, but unless we make an effort to be factual and see the bigger picture, as humans we are easily inflamed into excess.

Well, I'm currently watching the local flares after a full-blown psychiatric case still legally owning guns killed nine plus his mother and himself in a xenophobic shooting spree in Hanau, Hesse this week, so I'm kind of inspired.

Thanks for the data analysis. I get it now that someone put it in third grade terms.

There can't possibly be 3,287 deaths per day by automobiles. Something is very wrong with that statistic. The daily number of automobile deaths in the US is right around 100 depending on what recent year you use. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Gene Hillman,

Wait, what? |
I wish the illustration had used circles exclusively at scale for effect. The tiny dot representing "mass shootings" would be a very effective way to show just how inconsequential they are in the scheme of things. “Remember to get vaccinated or a vaccinated person might get sick from a virus they got vaccinated against because you’re not vaccinated.” - author unknown

More people die of asphyxia during sex than mass shooting each year.

Ignored facts still exist |
Starting from the left side... 99.4% of those who died in 2017 died of causes other than Murder. But of those who died, 0.6% of them were murdered. moving to the right, of those 0.6% who were murdered, 99.5% of them died (were murdered) with the murder taking place *not* in a mass shooting situation. Leaving 0.5% of those who were murdered dying during a mass shooting. Taking to a bit further, it seems that if you died in 2017, among a million deaths, 30 of those were by mass shooting. .

You are correct Gene. That statistic was a GLOBAL number...my apologies. So STILL...GLOBALLY...automobiles are more of a death threat than scary black rifles... "If you’re a leader, you lead the way. The graphic was a little confusing at first until I realized they were two pie charts. If the media could build a 24-hour news cycle out of the 99.4 percent, coverage of gun control would be whole different story.

This is the way I read it as well. I'm more likely to die from falling off my back porch than by gunfire and that's before cocktail hour. Jim ________________________ "If you can't be a good example, then you'll have to be a horrible warning" -Catherine Aird

As well as in the USA. Motor Vehicles cause more deaths per year in the USA than all rifle deaths per year in the USA. .
