Yeah like it is breeze filing taxes. The Internal Revenue Service warned Monday of a “frustrating” tax filing season in the coming weeks as the agency contends with a backlog of returns, staffing shortages and a massive increase in phone calls from taxpayers. The IRS cautioned it is still working on “prior-year individual tax returns that have not been fully processed.” “In many areas, we are unable to deliver the amount of service and enforcement that our taxpayers and tax system deserves and needs. This is frustrating for taxpayers, for IRS employees and for me,” IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said in a statement. “IRS employees want to do more, and we will continue in 2022 to do everything possible with the resources available to us.” The agency said it will accept individual tax returns for 2021 on Jan. 24, with a filing deadline of April 18 for most taxpayers. The IRS regularly enters filing season with a backlog of approximately 1 million tax returns from the prior year, but the logjam appears to be significantly worse this year. Treasury Department officials warned the agency faces “enormous challenges,” with a backlog “several times” higher than normal. The IRS claimed that it was still working through “prior-year individual tax returns.” AP Photo/Patrick Sison, File The exact number of tax returns waiting to be processed is unclear, but the IRS had 6 million unprocessed individual returns as of late December, according to its website. Pandemic-era stimulus payments have complicated processing efforts for the IRS. The agency is also contending with a surge in phone calls during the pandemic. Last year, the IRS received more than 145 million calls from January 1 through May 17, or more than four times its normal call volume. Despite the warning, the IRS said it expects most taxpayers to receive their refund within three weeks, provided they file electronically and set up direct deposit. President Biden called for an additional $80 billion in funding for the IRS in his social spending bill. AP Photo/Patrick Semansky This year’s filing deadline is slightly later than the usual date of April 15. Officials said the change was made to account for the observation of the Emancipation Day holiday in Washington, DC. " The Internal Revenue Service warned that this year’s tax season may be “frustrating.” AP Photo/Patrick Semansky As part of his social spending bill, President Biden has called for an additional $80 billion in IRS funding to support a hiring spree, increased audits and better technology. Biden argues the funds will help crack down on tax cheats and close the “tax gap,” or the difference between what Americans owe and what the IRS collects. Republicans oppose the effort to expand the IRS, arguing the initiative would be too invasive and harmful to ordinary Americans. LINK: https://nypost.com/2022/01/10/...-backlog-of-returns/

Flat tax is the solution. I've only ever met complete incompetence if not outright crookedness in EVERY IRS employee I or my company has every dealt with. Like the FBI, they have become the punishment gestapo for the left. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "The trouble with our Liberal friends...is not that they're ignorant, it's just that they know so much that isn't so." I typically claim zero deductions on my "real" job because I do outside IT contracting. Most years my return is $500 to $1000 that I either pay (usually) or get back. In 2020 I didn't do much outside contracting but forgot to change my deductions. For 2020 the gov owed me about $8000. (I know VERY stupid of me) I filed about Feb 1 of last year. I'm still waiting for my money

On the one hand, you guys aren't cynical enough. On the other hand, I haven't seen such a spate of this kind of horse manure since I sat down to write a paper on how the Ortegas took control of private foreign currency reserves in Nicaragua after the Sandinista takeover. But, seriously, you guys aren't cynical enough. First Uncah Ho sweeps into DC bearing a mighty "the rich are evil!" zeitgeist in its fetid fumes. This means that more returns are audited because anyone making more than so much is presumably a criminal - or at least not terribly civic minded. Then Uncah Ho decides it needs hundreds of billions to spend, but can't get the money voted to it by Congress. All of the sudden the various definitions the government uses of "rich" get modified - downward. You know, so that there are more presumably criminal but at least not terribly civic minded people who are rich enough to be forced to pay more and who therefore deserve to be punished financially. Now we have an especially large backlog of tax returns because we suddenly magically have a whole lot more "rich" people even though most elements of the economy are sucking dead donkey dong. Therefore Uncah Ho demands money to hire more IRS personnel. Apparently few people noticed he's consistently been doing since early January of last year, but that's how you know that a big part of Uncah Ho's strategy was always to aggressively tax a much large percentage of the population than Uncah Ho ever admitted it was going to. First you create the problem, then you figure out how to profit off of the problem, and then you make someone else pay to solve the problem - in whatever way you find politically convenient.

Do No Harm, Do Know Harm |
Those bumbling fucking morons have updated my “processing” refund…since July…to “We don’t even know who you are” They owe me 2 grand, because my CPA can’t read English. I posted about it a while ago. I think I’ll just under pay by 2 grand this year and see if they figure it out by next Christmas. Imbeciles. Actually, can one file an amendment to apply the unpaid refund to the next year’s taxes? That’d be swell. Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here. Although sometimes distracting, there is often a certain entertainment value to this easy standard. -JALLEN "All I need is a WAR ON DRUGS reference and I got myself a police thread BINGO." -jljones

I left CA on June 11. My CPA there will file my final return ever for CA. Purposely we left before end of June so I was only there less than half a year. I claim 10 and also fully fund a Roth 401k ( post tax) so I end up owing a few bucks after everything is settled. As much as it sucks to write yet another check to the worthless.gov. I’d rather do that every year then give them a free loan. The best part omitted by the story is any advice they give on their no help hotline is not correct they can’t be held liable if it harms you. If you have serious questions or a complicated tax life, pay a pro to do your return.

I think (hope) that this will eventually help get the democrats booted out at the ballot box. When democrats don't get their tax refunds they may start to notice that the Big Government they aspire to is just a bunch of inept nincompoops. Folks, never file a tax return showing a refund. In the old days, many people used to look at federal income tax withholding as a savings account. They looked forward to a nice shot of cash in the spring. Now the IRS is showing them that they can't trust .gov with their money. ---------------------------------------------------- Dances with Crabgrass

We had to wait until October to get a refund. The only problem some have with a flat tax is not accepting its across the board no matter what. We have to 'be nice" and cut out economic groups who shouldn't pay an egregious rate for the pittance they earn. And the set asides and special interests pile on to destroy what a good idea it was in the first place. Nope, if granma can't pay her $700 in tax (wasn't it being withheld already?) then we could go back to what was working fine up to 1917 - NO INCOME TAX AT ALL. But that would reduce the amount of dollars the FED RES loans to the .GOV, for which we are indebted to pay the sum AND INTEREST. And where does all that money go? To prop up money in the world market where the Fed Res makes profit.

Ah yes, reason #223 to send them less in taxes than your total tax bill for the year. That way, there's no "refund" to wait forever for. You've already got it in your hand.

Still working on last year's returns??? WTF. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." If we don't pay on time, we get penalized. Why shouldn't the IRS be penalized for not processing refunds on time?
