or, as it's billed here in UK, Le Mans 66.

This over-hyped bilge, according to one reviewer, has Matt Damon [Carroll Shelby] and his pal the British driver played by Christian Bale, re-enacting the titanic struggle between Ferrari - who dominated the 24 hour race in the 60's, and Ford, who'd never even entered a car before.

Many of us here, me included, remember that magnificent reality of the crushing defeat inflicted on the prancing horse by the blue oval, but how many also know that the Ford GT40 was built in England, having been designed by an Englishman, Eric broadley, boss of Lola racing cars, and builder of the Lola Mk6 on which the Ford car was strongly based.

Naturally, I'm going to see the movie, but I have me doots that my wishes for a mention of the facts behind the Ford GT40's genesis here in England, and not just ONE car, but ALL of them up to and including the MkIII, will be swept under the carpet of ages...

I won’t see it. I just think it’s funny Ferrari hasn’t had an overall victory at Lemans since.

Documentaries of the real story abound, and are likely more entertaining and satisfying than this will be.

Yep, the GT40 is a magnificent machine. At least one of our members has one (don’t know if original of a repo). One of our sons has an RCR repo GT40 (also magnificent) and another son is building a Shelby Daytona Coupe. (also a great car but without the history of the “40”).

Not surprising since they haven't competed there as a factory effort in about 50 years.

However....this subject is covered elsewhere.

Yeah, because of Ford.

I believe one of the REAL GT-40's gets some air time in the movie. A scene where Henry Ford II gets the ever lovin' crap scared out of him in a ride around the course. At least heard that on Rush, or some radio show.

It's a story of good old American ingenuity too.

Once they got the aero* sorted out and the cars were more stable at speed BRAKES were the issue. They hit 200+ at the end of the Mulsanne straight and the rotors and pads were immediately subjected to 1500 degree temperatures, causing failures. The Ford Team devised a method of quickly and easily changing out pads and rotors on pit stops..helping with the brake issue.

* Aero was very important. Early cars would get so light at speed, that they SPUN TIRES at 200 mph! Just IMAGINE that for a moment.

To this day one of THE most beautiful race cars ever.

So important that it killed Ken Miles, their test driver at Riverside. That was another issue to overcome.
Those old cars had a lot of ride height and pitch and yaw. The nose up, rear down attitude under acceleration in a high horsepower car and it did like nature intended. Took off.
Similar things have even happened more recently under just the right conditions.

I think most people open up in the lounge and are completely unaware of the other forums we have.

Depending on the reviews here, I may or may not see it.

PD, give Tac a break, he has been here nearly as long as you, give or take a few months. He just posted in the wrong section.

The casting of Damon and Bale insures I won't see this movie. And I'm a rabid car guy! These two nitwits shouldn't be anywhere near this movie.

What I find interesting is that the original gt40 was based on a Lola.

Will not watch. Fake story, but the real is very cool. Too bad they gave it the hollywierd treatment. Was not needed.

Guys shouldn’t be so thin-skinned. The point I was trying to make was there is more than one forum besides the Lounge. I do enjoy the alternatives and I’m always surprised by the lack of attention given to the Lair, Pistols, Bitchin’, Rifle Room, etc. There’s a lot of good stuff here.

I’ve been following the Ferrari vs Ford thread but I haven’t posted because I haven’t seen it nor has anyone else here. It could be good or it could be bad. No one knows yet.

Not sure if anyone here has had access to a sneak preview or not.

Damon's politics do not align with mine. He is not a super secret killer agent, but damn if I havent watched the Bourne series multiple times.

Don't be so close minded that you discount the possibility that he could actually do a good job. I have no idea how tall Shelby was, so no expectations. So far, this seems to be the dis qualifier.

Heck, Cruise is likely too short to qualify for an F14, but we all enjoyed the movie.

At this point, I am hoping for reviews from folks that have seen it, so I can make an informed decision. Not hate on it because of political, physical, or psychological reasons.

When it comes to movies, I put politics aside. Movies are for entertainment.

Matt Damon is a decent actor. So is Bale. Trailer looks pretty good. The story isn’t anything we all don’t know, but I think it’ll be better than another rerun of the Golden Girls.
