My old one is dying, Long Live the iPhone 5!!!

It did bring me out of the comforts of my Luddite Device Syndrome.....

so the current Final 2 are:

Samsung 9
iPhone 8

understand different yadda [insert tecktalk here]yadda,

trying to understand the unwitting drive to reach for 'SOMETHING BIGGER' when 'something medium' would actually serve well enough....

I've been researching all manner of current devices from low end on up. Intend to stay with Verizon as it serves my travel sectors very well.

useful/thoughtful/relevant comments/tips/exhortations/dire warnings/urging to take advantage of Our Technical Richness solicited.

Before it's too late.

I just got the S9+ a couple weeks ago - from an S7 Edge. Its only slightly larger than the S7edge, but due to the reduction of the bezel size the screen is considerably larger. The two outstanding items on this phone are the battery and camera.

On my s7 edge - unless I had some HEAVY use I'd regularly get 48 hours of life on a charge. With this phone and usage levels I'm looking at 65 - 70 hours per charge. Currently I have 38 hours of run time and the battery is still at 64%.

The dual rear camera is... outstanding. The camera on the s7edge was pretty decent - this dual camera with different modes is really impressive. Portrait mode blurs anything in the background like you'd get with a short focal plane on a real camera. 'Low Light' shots look great with out using the flash. I haven't tried much of the other fancy shot modes (I'll likely watch a video on it first to see how it really works), but so far just for general shots it's been great.

I've heard many good things about the iPhone. Apparently, they spend more on each phone to produce than the other manufacturers, since they have such high volume. I just despise the apple operating system. . .

I love my Samsung S7 Active, though, so it will take me quite a bit to upgrade (normally, we wait until our phones are physically dying before we switch).

I can't speak to the technical pros and cons of each, as I own neither and quite possibly never will. (My wife and I have fairly new iPhone 6S', which I expect will hold us for a good many years.)

But... I do not trust Google with keeping my personal data personal. I do not trust Android with keeping my secure stuff secure. And I particularly distrust Samsung, so, even if I did go Android: It would certainly not be with a Samsung device.

In many ways I liked Android more than I do iOS, but I trust iOS and Apple, and that trumps everything.

If you can hold off until September or there abouts there may be better pricing and a few more options.

Samsung phones are some of the few that are certified for battlefield use by the US military. This along with Knox - yeah I trust them.

As far as Apple, yeah I would trust them too, though it has been shown that they weren't forthcoming with the battery slowdowns (for years saying that they don't slow down phones to make you upgrade to newer iPhones) and the iPhone 6 bending - now that it has been shown in court (thanks to a class action lawsuit) that Apple had known all along, even before releasing the iPhone 6, that it was very susceptible to bending. After the release, Apple even invited tech journalists to their lab to prove that the iPhone 6 plus were not prone to bending - a bold face lie in light of recent court documents (from their internal docs - 6+ 7.2 times more prone to bending).

All companies lie and conceal flaws to some extent. But there's nothing to indicate that Samsung misuse or lie anymore than the others.

Back on topic: I had a chance to compare an S9, Pixel 2 XL and S7 edge. The camera of the S9 blew away the rest in low light photos. In good lights, hard to tell them apart.

iPhone SE. An iPhone5 with the guts of an iPhone6. Mint used condition on Swappa.com, $160. Just got one for the ex-. Spent two weeks figuring it out for her, as I am still using a rotary dial cell phone, and am amazed. Especially with Apple Music.

I still have a Galaxy S4 mint condition for the Sprint network, gifted, not activated, because the Android OS is so alien to me ...

I got forced into a new phone when my Note5 decided to stop charging.
Being on ATT & not wanting an iPhone, I got a Galaxy S9+.

Quite happy with it in the just over a week that I've had it.

Isn't the problem the unsecured apps not the OS itself?
I guess you could interpolate that it is the OS's job to regulate but if you don't install a bunch of useless (the fact is that most are) apps with no regard to vetting and security then why worry?
Also who keeps top secret shit on their cell phone anyway?

I order/replace the cell phones at my employer and we have much more trouble with iPhones and that stupid ITunes account than we do with the Android phones.

You would not believe how many people phone calls and texts go to the wrong phone that use iPhones for work and personal use. You call their work number and their personal phone rings and vice versa. Texts to the personal number go to the work phone and vice versa. We spend more time with tech support for these issues than anything else.

We vary rarely have tech support issues on the Android phones.

I encourage everyone to get an Android but some don't listen and many end up on the phone with tech support.

I think this is a very easy answer for you. You've had and liked the iPhone 5, so the iPhone 8 will likely be the best solution for you. It will provide an ecosystem you're already familiar with and upgraded specs and capabilities. The Samsumg S9 is an excellent phone as well, but I loathe the bloatware and Android overlay Samsung installs on all their phones. Regardless how good the hardware was, Samsung's bloat addiction would keep me from buying their products.

That's weird. We have the exact opposite situation where I work. In fact very few people go with an Android devices now because of all the nightmares people have had with them. The iPhones almost never have an issue.

I find it rather interesting the user (i.e. employee) actually has any input into this process. We've always been handed what we were to use given the "company is paying the bill".

I know it wasn't on your list, but I would highly recommend staying away from LG. I had an LG2, and it was a fantastic phone. My nephew got a G5, and it was a piece of garbage. The glass over the camera broke (on 2 consecutive phones), and they wouldn't cover it under warranty (saying it was "damaged" instead of "defective"). I heard that LG dropped the quality of components going into their phones so they could increase their profit margin. Either way, the G5 was junk.

I have a Samsung S7 Active, and I'm very happy with it. It takes really good photos and doesn't have any significant vices that I've found.

We are a bring your own device shop. Certain employees have their service covered via a company plan, but devices are not provided. We used to be roughly 50/50 with Android/Apple devices, but now we only have a few Android devices left on our plan.

If you stick with iPhone, you should be able to backup your current phone then restore that image to your new phone. Everything will be there. Text messages and all.
I did it from 4s to 6s to 7+. I will do the same when I go to the next iPhone.
