One of the items that came from my local CERT training was the PASS method:

P - pull the pin on the extinguisher
A - aim the nozzle at the base of the fire
S - squeeze the trigger of the extinguisher
S - sweep the extinguisher's spray from side to side, again keeping it low at the base of the fire

As also stated, your local FD would likely welcome an opportunity to walk you through the process.

Please resist the urge to pull the pin and throw the extinguisher into the fire, it doesn't work that way.

Yeah, actual fire grenades didn't come with pins. Big Grin

Some did. Just last weekend we were at an antique show and a guy had one for sale. It was a glass object, kind of pointy at the top and round like a ball on the bottom. I have no idea what the liquid was, but the idea was to throw it at the fire and it was supposed to extinguish the fire.

And the advice offered here runs counter to the local FD and fire service company. Where you aim should be determined by the fire. If its billowing up at you, shoot the first shot to knock down the flames, then aim at the base. Then when your little inadequate hand held thing runs out, throw it at the fire and run like hell. That last is my assumption of what to do, but probably fairly accurate.

So lets go back to the beginning. First, call the fire department. Then waste your time and efforts trying to fight a fire which you are sorely undertrained to do. Of course that doesn't happen for 5 full minutes whilst the 911 operator asks you all kinds of questions that don't seem relevant to the problem. While showing a snippy attitude as if you're bothering her.

Unfortunately there are no fire grenades in my collection, but this is what we're discussing
