I was told by several different times and several different trainers to handcuff unless they are split in two, missing both arms, or their head is separated from their body by at least 3 feet.
He had one knife on him and tried to kill the cop, nothing says that he doesn't have another knife or weapon. Properly handcuffed makes them LESS of a threat, even then you keep your eyes on them.
This wasn't a suicide by cop, he would have started waving and yelling at the officers as he approached them. He calmly and quietly walked up to the 3 cops with the knife partially hidden. This was a straight up assassination attempt on the "evil" police. This message has been edited. Last edited by: jsbcody,

He wasn't handcuffing him. He was just applying tourniquets to the offenders hands so he wouldn't bleed out.
Holy hell what a hard job. Just taking a report and someone tries to stab you?!?!?!?
People need to understand what these men and women have to deal with and how quickly they can lose their lives.
Talking back, shouting at and screwing with cops is so wrong. They know this stuff happens. They see vids like these in training. Getting in their face only raises your chances of dying when you don’t need to...and it’s your fault if you do.

Just because someone is shot does not mean they are not still a threat. Handcuffing is standard procedure in a situation like this for exactly that reason.

In 1980 I was involved in a shooting inn which a man tried to kill me. After I shot him I cuffed him because I didn't know if he was dead or not. My Sgt. came by and ordered me to uncuff him because "it looks bad". I did. A short time later the man rose up and tried to attack me again. I didn't shoot him again but I did kick him in the head several times and knocked him out. I swore to myself after that that if I ever had to use deadly force again I would handcuff the offender until I was absolutely certain that he was either dead or unable to harm me or anyone else. So maybe that's why they handcuffed him. Just sayin.

Look, I'm pro-LEO, my oldest friend (35+ years) was a VA State Trooper and is an SSA in the FBI. He's the person who taught me how to shoot well and safely, back in the early 1990s.
Clearly, some folks seemed did not like my opinion that the suspect, who richly deserved being shot for trying to stab a PO, getting handcuffed while clearly shot multiple times add bleeding hard "looked wrong." That's my opinion and I'm not now and have never been a LEO.
I also pointed out that the LEO fired 7-8 times in 1-2 seconds. I am glad no one else got shot by accident in those close quarters.

The perp didn't just try to stab the LEO, but actually stabbed him, and still had a knife and was moving his hands as he went down. Shooting him again would have been prudent, not just handcuffing.
