You’d be in favor of that bullshit? Too much potential for mistakes or abuse. No

I’m with Q. This isn’t going to happen.

This technology is another great example of “just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.”

Sooner or later, there will be a lady fleeing an abusive ex, or a mom trying to calm a kid in the back seat, or a kid stuck in a bad ‘hood trying to navigate out, and the system will shut the vehicle down.

THEN this unnecessary tech will finally get the negative attention it deserves.

Politicians seem to have forgotten that they work for us, not the other way around.

I have it in my Ford Mach E.

It doesn’t shut the car off or anything like that. It turns off the the Hands free blue cruise. If you’re not looking at the road and making a sammich in the back seat it will buzz and beep then disengage.

It only activates when you go hands free even though it’s looking at you all the time.

You can see it above the horn in the picture.

The day I find an air-cooled circa-1970ish Volkswagen that's not completely rusted out-- the curse of every one of them east of the Mississippi and north of the Mason-Dixon-- I will go off the grid, automotively speaking.

Air-cooled, can pretty much drop the engine by yourself, completely overhaul, and have it back in by sunset using the tools an average homeless dude is carrying around.

Sound system? Time to dust off an old Radio Shack transistor jammie to hang from the rear-view so I can listen to that new FM band.

Inspection or emissions? Feck off, it's an antique.

EMP? Bwahahahaha. No, not worried. Tracking/Disabling? Nope.

Jokes on them. By the time I can afford a 2027 model year vehicle, I'll be too old to drive!

I'm with DennisM, though...kinda wish we still had my wife's old 72 Super Beetle. I hated that car when she had it back in college, but with time and experience working on stuff I come to appreciate how simple it was.

What you have in your Mach E is NOT the same thing as the 'mandated' AI Camera Tech being discussed. According to reports, it will absolutely shut down the vehicle, not just turn off Hands Free Blue Cruise.

You're probably just a software update away from the 'full featured' version though.

It has the technical bits, and I'd suspect that the software is already on the MachE but not fully activated as of yet, Tesla, GM SuperCruise, Ford BlueCruise all use a camera or sensors to make sure the driver is paying attention.

Just wait until the camera records what you're doing and uploads it to your insurance company who get to see you getting a BJ on the Freeway while your car drives you home!

Yep, in fact I would vote for it. Every single drive I make locally is dangerous. People are totally inattentive. Not much to it either. Squad car fitted with an extra cam on the side. 2 LEO’s, one zooming in to record them doing it, and the other driving. Then bust them and take them to jail. They’ve done tests and it’s more dangerous than DUI. DUI, you go straight to jail, and don’t pass go. Distracted driving is worse than DUI therefore should have the same penalties. Driving anywhere, any time of day now, is extremely dangerous. I’ve done a lot of track time in the past 25 years on 4 wheels and 2 wheels and it’s to the point locally I don’t even ride my motorcycles anymore. They get used out of state and trailered there. Half the people on the road here are playing with the phone and not paying attention. You mention mistakes or abuse. Sorry I don’t agree. This would be just an enforceable dash cam, only the PD be using it. You think requiring video proof of this behavior = abuse? I do not. Video doesn’t lie. Record their dumb stupid asses doing this behavior, then arrest their asses.

What is occurring due to pathetic driving is more technology. At first it was backup cameras. Now ADAS of all flavors. Lane keep assist. Collision mitigation braking. Reverse pedestrian checking, whatever that is called. Blind spot monitoring. And some form of autonomous cruise control. All of this shit requires cameras, sensors, radar, more wiring, additional ECU’s, and it’s why new vehicle costs are so outrageous these days. Not to mention having to fix the bs if it breaks. Or recalibrate some camera if you need a new windshield. I’m tired of having to pay for everyone else’s pathetic driving skills. Fuck em they should be in jail. Put the phone away when you drive. New cars have AA and CarPlay. They all have Bluetooth. There is no excuse I will buy for playing with my precious when you pilot a 3000 pound + vehicle. CUV’s, SUV’s, and trucks can be 4000-7000 pounds. I’ve talked to LE here that work the wrecks. They tell me they’d rather be dealing with a drunk than a phone idiot. At least the drunk is trying to drive according to them. They’ve told me how bad some of these wrecks are. I don’t want people losing their wife, children, family, etc due to some inattentive asshole. Jail is the only way they’ll learn. This could be huge revenue to be reallocated to schools, education, something. This is way past out of hand. Now they want to put in Hal9000 to record me driving my own vehicle? No. Let’s deal with the real problem, and start using handcuffs and tow trucks and remove these POS from the road. Then we don’t need AI cameras monitoring drivers. And we wouldn’t have to pay for it.

^^^ I have a better solution that does not invade anyone's privacy. Cell phone blockers in every vehicle. If the ignition is "on", so is the blocker. Want to make a call or watch YouTube Shorts? Pull over and turn off the ignition.

Bummer. They might just have to learn how to go five seconds without looking at their phones. I know that that's horrifying for many people, but they'll figure it out.

Um, the cars fitted with five radios, two cell phones, and a laptop already?

Let’s do talk about distracted driving….

This is an interesting conversation! I had a 1992 Volvo that I had for 20 years before it needed more work than I wanted to pay for. I should have paid for it! I might still look for a 1992 Volvo 240 GL Like I had. No extra bullshit to deal with. The only change I might make is the cassette player. Big Grin

Nope. AI being in your car watching you drive is the surveillance state. That’s actually so pathetic we are at this point already. Unless something is done this technology will be in every new vehicle on the market. I say use what we already have, unmarked police vehicles with cameras. Get caught on camera playing with your phone, go to jail. It’s way past out of hand. I’m past tired of the excuses for the behavior. You don’t need to play, touch, or hold your wittle phone when you drive. They’ve done the tests and distracted driving is worse than DUI yet one is legal and many people do it every day. The other illegal and you get arrested. If anything this is the land of the hypocrite. These narcissistic assholes risk themselves, their vehicle, every vehicle around them, and every driver around them so they can stare down at a 6” piece of glass and smear their finger all over the glass. This is what society has come to at this point. A bunch of people, all day, smearing their finger over a piece of glass. I want something done about this before another person dies due to it, especially a child. Get them off the road. All of us are already paying for this behavior via expensive vehicle prices and insurance. Nothing is getting done.
