So the best measure if you're concerned your phone will be perused by law enforcement or BP, is to turn it off when approached or approaching them, then the lock code comes in, FaceID isn't active and bob's your uncle, you just login with the ID later and FaceID works....

Yes, in the U.S., courts have generally allowed law enforcement to compel you to unlock your phone using your face or fingerprint.

Under the Fifth Amendment, biometrics are treated as physical evidence, not "testimonial" statements, so you can be forced to use them.

In the latest case (USA v. Brown) involving biometrics, The US District Court for the District of Columbia determined that compelling the defendant to unlock his cellphone was legal. However, The US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit ruled that, forcing the defendant to do so violates the Fifth Amendment.

So, with various courts ruling differently, I see this eventually ending up in SCOTUS.

I haven’t crossed the border in 22 years, but what stops me from wiping my phone before crossing and restoring it from a backup after crossing?

Use a low wattage plug in charger overnight, for best battery life. I did that on my last iPhone 15 and the battery is still like new (kid still uses it).

On my iPhone 16, I've been using high wattage fast chargers and 25 watt magsafe (magnetic wireless charging) and my battery is toast after less than a year. It dies within like 8 hours when it used to last 25+ hours.
