Picked one up the other day. Had the belkin glass protector put on. Already cracked, doh. Think the gal at verizon cracked it putting it on?
Battery life is terrible. Like lasts 24 hrs, wth?
I am not totally down on it, but enough at this point to return. At least thinking about it. Anyone?
Came for a Sumsung A13.

Depending on the pricing, because I understand, there's an increase coming on Apple. I wanna see the 18 out in September.

24 hour battery life sounds great to me!

I'm still using a 13, but think I'll be upgrading in the next year. Figured I'd go to the 17.

ETA, this is my third iPhone and I've never had a cracked screen. I use cheap aftermarket cases, nothing special and only had a screen protector on my first phone, which I soon took off because it bubbled and was hard to see through.

I'm still on a 13, but the 17 is supposed to have phenomenal battery life. Are you getting 24 hours of actual usage vs. standby time? That's pretty damn good.

Meaningless without knowing what you’re doing with your iPhone.

My iPhone 14 Pro is my fifth iPhone. I keep them two or three years. I’ve never had a glass crack, and I’ve never used a glass protector.

Serious about crackers.

I got a 12 when 13s were sold out and my phone died.

The battery is needing needing replacing soon.

I am hoping the fold comes out in September.

If not I will just update the battery and wait for the 19 or whenever this phone dies.

Been using iPhones since #5. Usually skip every other upgrade. Love my 17 Pro Max and would never consider going back to Android.

Battery use when first set up and with major OS updates is higher than normal due to a lot of indexing and what not in background. Returns to “normal” after a few days.

What are you expecting for battery life? I charge mine overnight to 90%, use it all the following day and it is usually in the 30-40% range at bed time.

Exception is if I am streaming a lot of music as well as using it to a long track bicycle ride, even then I’ve never not made it through a day.

With a 40w charger and cord, you can get 50% charge in 20 minutes, mag charger will take a little longer 30 min or so for 50%

Per ChatGPT, iPhone charges much faster:

Assuming you're using the original charger supplied with each phone (or an equivalent charger):

Samsung Galaxy A13 0-50% in 45–60 minutes. Full charge 2–2.5 hours
iPhone 17 0-50% in 25–35 minutes. Full charge 1.5–2 hours

If you really need longer time between charging, you can get an extended battery case for less than $30 on Amazon that will double the life or more.

As for actual tech comparison, you are comparing a so-so phone with a big battery to a “flagship” phone with about 25% less battery capacity.

Per ChatGPT:

If you're comparing the older Samsung Galaxy A13 to the standard iPhone 17, the answer depends on whether you mean **battery capacity** or **real-world battery life**.

| Feature | Samsung Galaxy A13 | iPhone 17 |
| -------------------- | ------------------------- | -------------------------------- |
| Battery capacity | 5,000 mAh | ~3,692 mAh (estimated) |
| Typical light use | Up to 2 days | About 1–1.5 days |
| Heavy use | Full day | Full day |
| Video/web efficiency | Good | Excellent |
| Charging | 15W–25W (model dependent) | Faster charging, MagSafe support |
| Overall performance | Entry-level | Flagship |

The A13's large 5,000 mAh battery often lasts **longer than expected**, sometimes approaching two days with moderate use because of its lower-performance hardware and 60 Hz LCD display.

The iPhone 17 has a smaller battery but much more efficient hardware and software. Independent testing measured about **12 hours 47 minutes** of continuous web-browsing battery life for the standard iPhone 17.

Practical takeaway

* If your priority is **maximum time between charges**, the **Galaxy A13** may actually edge out the iPhone 17 in light-to-moderate use because of its huge 5,000 mAh battery.

* If your priority is **performance, camera quality, display quality, responsiveness, and long-term support**, the **iPhone 17 is in a completely different league** while still delivering solid all-day battery life.

And because ChatGPT “knows me” from my other use, it even did an individualized comparison based on my cycling…

For **your cycling/GPS use**, estimate:

| Use case | Galaxy A13 | iPhone 17 |
| ------------------------------- | -------------: | --------------------------: |
| GPS + Bluetooth + music | **5–8 hrs** | **7–10 hrs** |
| Navigation with screen on a lot | **3–5 hrs** | **5–7 hrs** |

Even though the Galaxy A13 has a **5,000 mAh battery**, it is older and less efficient. Samsung lists the A13 battery at 5,000 mAh, while reviews note it can last over a day with lighter use.

The **iPhone 17 should be better for your riding use**, especially GPS, Bluetooth, camera, brighter outdoor screen, and app responsiveness. Tom’s Guide measured the standard iPhone 17 at **12 hr 47 min** in its web-battery test.

My practical estimate: for a **2–4 hour bike ride**, either is fine. For **5+ hour rides**, the **iPhone 17 is the safer choice**. For all-day rides, carry a small power bank either way.

16 Pro Max, haven't had any battery life issues per se unless I run it on the motorcycle for several hours straight with music and GPS/Waze running. It will still go the whole day, just uses more battery.

Not “topping off” Definitely extends battery life. Likewise, I am rarely somewhere I don’t have easy charge access.

Got my 17 on release day, 9/19 and as of today (278 days in use) it has 135 charge cycles and still shows as having 100% max capacity.

I would consider myself a “moderate” user. On me all day long with lots of surfing, etc.

Thanks guys, helpful. I have spent a few hours watching some video's which has given me a lot of good info on operating and setting it up. "Thanks Jay".
My charger is 30 watt. Seems like I need to get a 10-15 watt for the night time charging and my phone is set up for optimal charging which is to prevent over charging and allows for a longer slower night time charge.

We use a mix of 65w and 100w chargers. My understanding is the devices and chargers communicate and negotiate the appropriate charge rate.

I've had a 17 for about a month. Mine gets some use during the day but not a ton. The battery level drops maybe 10% from where it started the day.

This phone has the best battery life of any iPhone I've owned.

I have a 17 Pro, just about a year old. I get no phone calls, it's used for texting and scrolling stuff. I've not had any issues with battery life, I use optimal charging, gets fully charged overnight. Really a computer to me, adjust my hearing aids, listen for birds, get weather/fire alerts.

This isn't really a thing on newer phones - "topping off" your phone battery is no longer a bad practice — really it's often better for modern lithium-ion batteries than letting them drain completely. The old "drain before charging" advice (from nickel-cadmium battery days) does not apply to modern phones.

Look for a wireless charger stand for your nightstand and put the phone on it in the evening.

If you rotate the phone horizontally while charging on the stand it go into Standby Mode, and will display different things such as calendar, temp, pictures, clock etc. It dims the light to a nice soft red so the phone becomes your alarm clock as well.

Similar to this one on Amazon, and its Prime days so lots of them are on sale...

Standby Mode Overview

Turning your iPhone sideways while charging is called StandBy mode. This feature turns your phone into a smart, stationary display that can function as a bedside clock, a digital photo frame, or a dashboard for widgets.

To ensure the feature works properly, check your settings:

Apple Support

Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

Tap StandBy.

Ensure the StandBy toggle is switched ON.

For the display to activate, your iPhone must be charging, locked, and sitting horizontally on a flat surface. If you use a MagSafe-compatible charger, the phone will even remember your preferred view (like a specific clock face or widget) for that exact location.
