Would I not be permitted to stay at the hotel if I refused to be searched? Probably. And what if he ultimately did find that I was carrying? What then? Would they allow me to stow my firearms in my vehicle? But it's parked on their property. And what if I had not arrived by car? I just don't know what would have happened, and I didn't ask. Thankfully I had nothing else gun related in my pack other than the ammo that he missed.”

You did good. This is an excellent example of “Never miss a good chance to shut up”.

It's already been speculated that maybe it wasn't missed, maybe he just gave you a pass.
I don't know, but an "extra 100 rounds of .357sig" is not light weight. It would be hard to miss.

I wonder what would have happened if you or anyone else had a rifle. What would they say or do ??? Also I wonder if they took note and reported your information to local police. Just thinking out loud here. I hope that the rest of the stay was incident free from the staff and security ??? God Bless Smile

Carrying a rifle in LV< take a spare golf bag with cover, nobody will give it a second glance.

Small pistol AR or AK, Tennis racquet bag

Interesting that you were let in, checked in, and then inspected, perhaps the desk clerk noticed the bags.

I got a pass on a half dozen occasions for those reasons.

That would be my guess

My hats off to you for keeping your cool and clamming up. Sometimes it’s an incredibly hard thing to do.
I know you bought a different pack but 5.11 has a 32L pack called the COVRT18 2.0 and it looks like something a college kid might have on his back. Just another option for you.
As for adding to other’s suggestions about carrying something a bit bigger, a friend used to stuff a Steyr AUG in a racquet bag.

The security guard was somewhat thorough in his search. By that I mean he went through every compartment, even the water bladder area in the back. The main compartment was chock full with clothes, and half way down he asked if it was all clothes all the way down. I just said yes. He stopped there and moved onto the next compartment. Ok, maybe not that thorough.

The extra ammo were these 50 round bags tucked in the drawstring sack attached at the bottom of the bag. They actually weren't that hard to miss. He obviously didn't want to take out every article of clothing or gear i had in there.

Hey, thanks! I'll check it out. I'm still trying out bags. I haven't received the Aer yet to know if I'll like it.

I travel a lot for work, we make it policy to check in and then after that we bring our bags in, which are all tactical type bags. I've stayed in NYC among other liberal places and had no issues, yet. It does help that I am military and have the authority to tell them to fuck off your not looking in our bags but thats because we carry crypto gear most times and have someone sit on it 24/7 while deployed.

We've had some fun conversations with cops that wanted to inspect our vehicles on the side of the road...

OK. With that additional information, it sounds like he just missed it. No pass given.
If it was in boxes it would have been harder to miss.

I rode the hotel elevator once with a guy pulling rolling luggage with one hand and holding an old Glock tupper-ware box in the other.

I have literally carried less than that in combat.

I don't like traveling with my Martin as some people assume it's an expensive guitar. Thieves know our stuff better than we do, it seems.

This is correct. If you don't dress like an "operator" you won't be thought to be one.

This is a private hotel. They can do this. It is perfectly legal, and it is their choice.

Does this do much to increase security? Probably not, but there it is.

The guard made the decision that Balze wasn't a threat and chose to stop looking. Maybe not as direct as I was thinking, but that was the pass.

On the other hand, had Balze said what he claims he would like to have said, the results would have been different.

Just be nice.

I would agree. If you don't want attention, don't do the "tacticool" thing. I suppose I didn't consider a black 5.11 pack to be that though. I just loved the practicality it afforded me. Nonetheless, it brought the attention, which is why I'm retiring this bag for traveling for now on.

When he was done, you should have asked what would happen if he found a gun. And unless they said kick you out, opened your jacket to let him know he missed the obvious.
