We received a Power Point presentation last week regarding the name changes. Here are a couple slides that stood out: How about a little context to this? Really, no mention of how many NVA his unit killed and what they accomplished at the 1965 Battle of Ia Drang? Just how many men he got killed and wounded? Not only that, but then Lieutenant Colonel Moore’s (how about actually referring to him as that instead of Hal?) wife is at the forefront of the painting, as if she is more important to our military history. And she gets a longer write up. Regarding this one: How about spell checking? It’s “Barfoot,” not “Barefoot.” How hard is it to make sure it’s correct? You’d think that maybe a few senior Army personnel would do a QC check before this PP presentation was put out. But, actual historical accuracy doesn’t matter to our “leaders” – it’s the purging of the Confederate names that matters most. I can say that as someone who was stationed at both Fort Benning and Fort Hood, probably 99% of soldiers, including myself, could not have told you who either of those generals were. Names eventually take on their own meaning - Benning is associated with Army Infantry, Hood is associated withArmor and Bragg is Airborne and Special Forces. | |||
