All life is uncertain, and the younger you are when it suddenly comes to an end, the more shocking it is, somehow.

Dying young and filled with promise is a million times worse than dying old, having done, hopefully, most of what you set out to do.

Many years ago, about forty years ago or so, about fifty of us serving over in Northern Ireland shared in an engagement party for one of our Royal Ulster Constabulary colleagues whom we all knew professionally, or, for a small bunch, as a fishing buddy.

The next day both he and his partner on the river bank were shot dead by the PIRA, using a Browning pistol that had been taken from a dead soldier - one of two beaten to death in public a short while before.

Live your life as best you can, and please accept our thoughts in your bereavement. Kiss the wife and hug the kids, and never leave the house without saying goodbye.

Man that is awful, so sorry.

I knew a guy who was the bar with his pals, took a shot with everyone and promptly dropped dead from a massive heart attack. He was about the same age. Just terrible. Good on your friend for donating life to so many in need.

Real sorry for your loss and my thoughts and prayers go out to you and his family and friends.

Sometimes the best we can do is remember that we, the living, are better off for knowing those special people that we have lost, and remember how our lives have been enriched by them.

I hope that, with time, you can remember your friend and smile with fond memories.

I'm sorry for your loss. As we grow older, these kinds of events become more frequent. I don't think we ever "get used to them", nor should we. Appreciating those close to us is part of our better nature and feeling that loss, shock, and grief, is an extension of that appreciation.
