That’s a dandy paperweight.

My brother and I moved my parents’ Trinitron maybe 22 years ago. It might have been a 36” if they made such a thing, but it was heavy. Heavier than our new 85” Sony flatscreen.

I was a die hard Panasonic plasma fan, hung on to one until 2018, the burn-in issue was hard to ignore anymore, and it was getting a bit long in the tooth. But otherwise a great TV, great image, until I bought a state of the art Samsung OLED set and I never looked back. Brighter, larger, excellent colors and blacks, better viewing from the sides, much lighter in weight. It still holds up today, even though we have not delved into the 4K thing yet.

One thing to consider about new smart TVs (and streaming sticks) is that they're sold at a loss. The manufacturers make money collecting and selling your data. That 10,000 word agreement you looked at for 12 seconds the first time you turned on the TV? Yeah, that's pretty much what it said.

I run a pihole and the biggest offender on my network in my Denon home theater receiver. It tries to phone home about every 10 seconds (but is blocked by the pihole).

Of course you always have the option of just not hooking up the internet.

That's one of the things that needs to change with technology and all of the data centers.

Data collection should be a consumer initiated opt in only type of scenario. Nothing buried in user agreements, and no entity asking you to do it. If you want your data collected you must initiate contact and request it.

Collecting your data without your specific request and authorization should be a felony. No fines for companies. Offenders go to prison.

Televisions with ACR technology are capturing up to 7200 images per hour and sending it back to the cloud. Everything that comes across your screen.

"Most modern smart TVs come with something called Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) built in. ACR is a fancy term for software that analyzes what's playing on your screen — even if you're watching cable, streaming from a USB stick, or casting something from your laptop. It's like Shazam, but instead of music, it fingerprints entire scenes of shows, movies, and ads. TVs with ACR can capture and identify 7,200 images per hour, or approximately two every second. That fingerprint is then matched against a massive database, and once it figures out what you’re watching, logs it, and sends the data off into the cloud."

There could be two issues here:

Issue 1: Being told what to do, what is best, what is preferable...and that your values are not relevant

Issue 2: TVs are better now, in many ways

A solution to both issues could be (1) to share openly that you feel that your values of preserving funds, making great decisions, buying the best you can when you have to buy it, maintaining items, using items until they die, etc. seem to be unappreciated. Wait for the unnamed to affirm your values and to restate their request as the new TV making new things possible and (2) to purchase a 65 inch Sony Bravia from Costco.

If you have visitors in the home, don't forget that the unnamed likely have values of being current, being modern, being in the know, having the good stuff also are valid. The old TV may affect their sense of worth, and could add embarassment when friends visit.

Have an old 50" Samsung plasma that looks decent enough but I'm not an avid TV watcher. It's on but I barely watch it it's background noise. Wife redecorated the living room last year and wanted a new TV. Walmart was my only choice locally so I went there. Everything looked like junk. Bought $100 worth of fishing gear and a Ruger 22 cal air gun for some red squirrel outlaws at the lake cabin and went home. I got the "look".
Still have the old plasma.

We recently bought a 75in Hisense U8 mini led to replace a 65in Hisense. The 65 had a decent picture but the U8 is so much better. The brightness, deeper shades of black and clarity is amazing. It’s one of the times that spending more money made a massive difference.

In 2009 I bought an open Box Samsung 50” Plasma and put it in my shop (No HVAC) to watch college football and soccer.
I moved it to our new house 6 years ago and put it in the MBR. It still works.
No the pic isn’t as good as the new Sony Bravia in the living room, and it isn’t a smart TV (Fire TV works well), but it is paid for and keeps on ticking.

My 2006-vintage Hitachi 1080i plasma just gave up sound, even on the stereo out other than the old RCA input from the 2009ish wii. Picture is still as good as most mid-range TVs today look with streaming/compressed videos, but decent TVs have eclipsed it.

Since it isn't the primary one we use, I want with a $450 75" Firetv that should be here Friday. I'd hate to buy a 75" plasma in 2006, and I sure as hell wouldn't want to carry it around.
Eventually, I'll open it up & see if I can fix it for a shop TV. More to see if I can do it. <$500 for a large TV that doesn't hurt to pick up is tempting.
