“The US could soon surpass China as the world leader in rare earth minerals after more than 2.34 billion metric tons were discovered in Wyoming. American Rare Earths Inc announced that the reserves near Wheatland dramatically surpass the Asian nation’s 44 million metric tons, saying it 'exceeded our wildest dreams’ after drilling only about 25 percent of the property. The company has a stake in 367 mining claims across 6,320 acres of land in the Halleck Creek Project, along with four Wyoming mineral leases on 1,844 acres on the same project now called Cowboy State Mine. The types of minerals at the site are used in smartphones, hybrid car motors and military technologies - among others. As much as 95 percent of processed rare earth minerals come from China - and the US imports 74 percent of its supply from the nation. However, China recently announced a ban on rare earth extraction in December 2023. Don Swartz, CEO of American Rare Earths, stated following the nation’s announcement: ‘China is driven to maintain its market dominance. This is now a race.’ Now, two months later, Swartz and his team are working to break China’s lock on the market. …” DailyMail article: https://mol.im/a/13062273 Serious about crackers

Wait, what? |
Haha, the commie rats thought they could extort us with limiting available resources. Now they could lose the US market entirely. “Remember to get vaccinated or a vaccinated person might get sick from a virus they got vaccinated against because you’re not vaccinated.” - author unknown

Good. Next step is to get a processing plant or, two up and running to make these metals useable.

To be honest I hate to hear about the mining and destruction of some of the greatest area'a left like this. Drilling for oil is good. harvesting timber is good, etc. Mining for all this green bullshit and cell phones, etc. is bad imho opinion. It is like watching the billions of metric tons of coal mined in SE MT. transported via rail to the west coast to be shipped to china daily is a travesty. So much wrong with this shit. I don't see this as a win. Mtcw "Practice like you want to play in the game"

No worries. I'm sure there will be too many EPA hoops to jump through to make it viable. ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Doug Patton.

Congratulations. You managed to shit all over something good. Yes, you're right- let's just ignore this discovery. That would be best. There, all better. You're right. The more stuff we're dependent on that we have to obtain from other countries, the better. And that goes double in the case of a war. Keeping dollars in America SUCKS when we could be sending them to China.

Green grass and high tides |
That is sort of my point. We should not be sending our coal to china to empower our enemy. We should be using it here to better serve Americans and American workers. And yes, I am totally against all this battery, solar panel, huge mining operations, etc bullshit here. Could of easily done it in Afgan. But we decide to give the "gold mine" there to The prc. You must be referring to some other post. The one I read says "To be honest I hate to hear about the mining and destruction of some of the greatest area'a left like this."

I don't think we should ignore it at all. In fact, I'd like to see every able-bodied man in Wyoming get on the business end of a shovel and dig the shit out of it. The problem is, I've seen these eco-whackos tie up mining operations around here for years/decades, I've seen them sue loggers into bankruptcy for cutting down dead trees, I've seen them destroy whole towns and economies. If you, or anyone, thinks that they are going to allow the dozers in next week to start mining this stuff, you're dreaming. Between the EPA hoops and the lawsuits, I'll be long dead before any of it comes out of the ground. It may be shitting all over something good, but it's reality. ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Help! Help! I'm being repressed! |
Seems awfully convenient that not even 3 months after China's ban was announced we discover this. Seems to me somebody has had this in their back pocket. But maybe I'm wrong and this all happened organically.

Everyone has been hunting alternatives to China. Sweden and Australia have been exploiting their own mineral reserves now. ____________________________ Eeewwww, don't touch it! Here, poke at it with this stick.

So what will old Joe do to protect his buddies in China ? There's a whole bunch of government agencies that have the power to derail this .

It is good news. Yes, we will legislate it so it can be done in some “clean” manner. Remember that China wants to be THE world power. Their leadership is doing as much as they can, via multiple routes to get there. Our leadership has, for decades, not really taken them seriously. Anything you shop for beyond the supermarket - look and see where it was made. I’ll bet it was China. They are the industrial power we were in 1950. Anything we can do to take some of that economic muscle away from them is to our advantage. Anything we can do to re-establish our industrial independence is to our advantage. Yes, mining can be ugly. Yes, we can and have re-established natural environments over mining country (ie parts of WV). As I said - this is good news.

Don't disagree with that, but... Reality check: The demand for rare earth minerals isn't going to decrease, much less go away. And Americans are probably the largest segment of consumers of products that employ them in the world. You own any modern electronics? Computers or anything else with a hard drive in it? Maybe you missed the part about how the Afghans wanted us out of there? It never ceases to amaze me how some people can see something so obviously beneficial to us and somehow turn it into something bad "America is at that awkward stage. I'm in favor of doing whatever we can to crush China back to the stone age - they steal everything but can't really do anything themselves as they just don't have the knowledge base it can be mined successfully and the land can be restored if we want it done that way, so lets stop pud-yanking and just get on with it

Now, you're expecting me to believe you're that obtuse? Coming up on fourteen years and twenty thousand posts in this forum and you behave as if you do not know or cannot comprehend that I ask members to refrain from trying to find the bad in victories for us? You know that I drive this point home whenever I see members pulling this shit and you did it anyway, and now you're going to ignore it when I point this out to you? What does this get you, huh? You defy my wishes and then act oblivious. What is that supposed to be? Just who do you think you're talking to?
