I called two Ford dealers, The sales people told me it all buttons and dials now. So what is the biggest advantage ? Or benefit ? Chevys, gmc's , dodges, are they all gone as well ? My Tundra has a dial. IMO just more things to go wrong in the future. "We've done four already, but now we're steady..."

The good: you can shift them into and out of 4wd automatically. Some even do that for you if the road is alternating between good and bad traction. The bad: more things to break, more complex to repair, usually needing a scan tool. (For those who say you shouldn't need one, that ship sailed a couple of decades ago. You need a computer to diagnose another computer.) I don't recall off the top of my head a manually-operated transfer case since about the turn of this century, and then only on lower-end less optioned trim levels.

My 2023 Jeep Wrangler still has the transfer case lever on the floor. Some Toyota 4Runners (TRD Pro) have it. Most trucks have gone to the dial I think.

They work better until they don't. Electronic switches are easier and don't require a physical linkage that can get misaligned and cause issues shifting. That said, when they do go there's not much you can do about it out in the field, and getting it fixed is going to require replacement of an expensive and in many cases otherwise unserviceable module. "The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people." "Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy." "I did," said Ford, "it is." "So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?" "It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want." "You mean they actually vote for the lizards." "Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course." "But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?" "Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

Wow, WOW!. IN 14 years of off road four wheeling with a manual transfer case lever and manual front hubs , Not one time did I ever think to myself , Gee , wouldn't a button or dial be nice. But 90% of that was off road driving. Bt even in the Denver winter months , for street during it never occurred to me. Safety, Situational Awareness and proficiency. It’s gone. You might be able to on base Ram trucks still but that’s it aside from the Jeep stuff which as a Jeep owner, I’d recommend you avoid. They’ve gotten pretty good at it and it is among the last of things I’d worry about on a modern truck.

Indeed. Spending serious money to have it (not) fixed was a big factor in deciding to trade. Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

I remember one where a link broke loose (plastic bushing fell apart) and the t-case lever it was attached to worked its way into the neutral position. Of course, the truck rolled to a stop. That still happens less often than t-case/axle shaft actuator motors and other things going bad. To the best of my knowledge, 4wd low range still does not engage "on the fly" like the high range.

Yes, I’m somewhat jealous of him. Not a fan of push buttons and/or knobs running servo motors.

A buddy that repairs vehicles claims that soccer moms, inexperienced four wheel drivers and youngsters drove the manufacturers to the knobs and buttons. Basically the customer dynamics changed over the years. His daughter has had a fwd pickup for five years and has never used the button once. Safety, Situational Awareness and proficiency. The last vehicle I personally drove with the floor transfer case lever was my dad's 83 Chevy pickup. I don't really miss having to come to a complete stop, shift it, deal with hopping around corners if the pavement was melted dry there, then stopping and backing up to shift out and disengage. Every one of my Tahoes, Yukons, and Silverados for the last several decades has had some form of electronic switching and I've never had a problem with any of them.

Well, the same could be said for dang near every system on a modern vehicle.

Jeep for the win! I’ve never had one fail. The dial in my Ford did fail several years ago in Colorado (of course when I needed it). ------------------ Eddie Our Founding Fathers were men who understood that the right thing is not necessarily the written thing. -kkina

The last AWD I owned with a transfer lever on the floor, was a late 60’s Chevy. I travelled the back roads of the Western Slope in Colorado. It hauled my English bull terriers, horses, loads of hay - you name it, with great success! No A/C, 4 on the floor with a “granny” first as I recall No quarter .308/.223
