In Belgium you can buy it in a spread form like peanut butter. Both creamy and crunchy. I used to stock up when I’d go over there. I have seen the spread at a few grocery stores here in the US in with the peanut butter. It’s very good on some toast.

That stuff is crack. Seriously.

I ate a jar of it in two days. I decided it was a food stuff that I cannot have, just like my favorite gluten-free granola. That stuff is crazy good.

It is indeed dangerous. I have never bought a jar in the US, limiting myself to only eating it when I’m in Belgium.

There is a hotel I stay at over there that has little single serve cups of it on their breakfast buffet. This same hotel has large jars of chocolate chunks. A chunk of Belgian chocolate dipped in the Speculoos is a great way to start your day after some jet lag. Though it’s also probably a great way to get diabetes too Big Grin

Well, you learn something new every day.

In my defense: Even my Dutch wife was not aware of speculoos. So there you go.

I only know because I spent so much time in Belgium and it’s been the topic of more than one drunken conversation. One of the guys I used to work with started a bakery/restaurant with his wife so he is passionate about Belgian cuisine.

If you really want to get under a Belgians skin tell them that fries are from France Big Grin

The Germans call them Spekulatius

The name all derives from Latin:

quote:

There are several interpretations for the origins of the name speculaas. It may derive from Latin speculum, which means mirror and refers to the fact that the images are cut as a mirrored bas-relief into a wooden stamp, which is then used to decorate speculaas. Another, less likely, word origin refers to the Latin word speculator which, among other meanings, could refer to a bishop or St Nicholas' epithet, "he who sees everything". Still another possible source is Specerij, the Dutch word for spice.

A variant of the Dutch speculaas is the Belgian speculoos. Fewer spices (mostly just caramelized sugar as base ingredient) are involved in the process of making Belgian speculoos compared to the Dutch speculaas, as the spices were much more expensive to import to Belgium as opposed to the Netherlands. Speculoos was developed in the 20th century around the area of Verviers, and made as an alternative for people who couldn't afford the real Dutch speculaas. In the 2020s the names speculaas and speculoos are sometimes used interchangeably in Flanders.

Believe it or not the Dollar General stores carry imported Stroopwafel cookies.

And yes they're entirely different from the type the OP inquired about. Both are addicting as is the Lotus Biscoff spread several have mentioned. Big Grin

Yup, they're Belgian Smile

"French" toast, however, is Dutch.

Funny story: One time my wife-to-be was making those and I referred to them as "French toast." She laughed. "No self-respecting French would have anything to do with these. They're Dutch." "Oh," I replied, "what are they called?" "Wentelteefjes," she replied. (approx. Ven-tell-tayf-yez) "What's that mean?" I asked. She was stumped.

Out came the Dutch/English dictionary. As with many words, the Dutch words "wentel" and "teef" could mean many things. The "je" is a diminutive, used to denote "small" or "dear" (as in "loved").

I, of course, chose the most amusing translation: "Wentelen": To flip, "Teef": Bitch (dog). Thus "little flipping bitches"

Thanks guys. I’m pretty sure it was the Lotus Biscoff cookies I had. My son really liked them and the local store doesn’t have them anymore. They may soon, you never know as they must buy overstocks and closeouts. I believe IIRC the company also sells direct. I’ll eventually get some more. Thanks again.

Now I want a Stroopwafel

My boss' dad is an Ex-Con[tinental] pilot & supplied a small stash of them a couple years ago. I haven't had cause to fly recently, so no Stroopwafel for a while, here.

Amazon carries Stroopwafels. Some of that Biscoff spread on one would be a real treat.

Both on their own are utterly amazing

Combined? That may open up some sort of wormhole or punch through the time-space continuum! Eek

DO NOT buy the cookie butter unless you're strong. If you're at all weak willed you may find yourself sitting down with a spoon and an empty jar. It's good stuff and if you're near a Wegmans I've bought it there in the past. The past.

As mentioned by others, I believe you mean Biscoff cookies. We get them all the time. I believe Amazon has them too, but we get ours locally at a Meijer store. Big chain store here in indiana.

Well after reading this I just had to get some of those Belgian cookies at Costco. I'd forgotten how good they are!

Believe windmill cookies are seasonal in my area. Have not seen any for months. Had been buying frequently until couple months ago.

I've been buying the Bischoff cookies. Picked up their spread for the first time. It's great! I wonder how well it would go with Nutella - Bischoff and Nutella sandwich.....

I made some pancakes (with toasted walnuts and vanilla extract). I used the Bischoff spread instead of maple syrup. Typing this makes me crave more.

I read this too quickly late at night and saw “toasted walrus”. Didn’t even give it a second thought, that stuff is delicious on anything.
