The Momma kitty I was feeding before I caught her and her kittens would eat most anything I gave her. After I caught her and she moved in, she's a poultry girl. She'll eat a little fish now and then but chicken and turkey is her usual, particularly from our table. I'm not sure how cheap canned chicken is.

Fresh mackerel is delicious, if a bit fishy and salty. By fresh, I mean “swimming in the last 12 hours.”

Canned mackerel is revolting.

Mackerel doesn’t travel well. Not even frozen. Most of what you see in sushi shops that don’t have an ocean view is smoked. Smoked mackerel is one of those things you’ll either love or hate, and I know more people who hate it than love it.

Chicken?

After eating fresh caught King and Spanish Mackerel for so many years while living in FL, I don't think I could bring myself to eat it out of a can.

It probably depends on the canner. I like King Oscar “Tiny Tots” bristling sardines. Other canned sardines, not so much.

I feel like ours were just cornmeal, flour, egg and salt.

Thanks for that. I liked salmon patties when I was a kid, but they’d completely slipped out of my mind.

I know quite a few folks who will eat it on the boat, cut into sashimi.

Only knew one who would eat it after.

Maybe it’s like tuna, and better if it’s bled?

I caught 100 mackerel one day, most of it went to my friends who smoked and BBQ'd it. They said it was very good. I had it in a live bait tank, and the total time from live to dead was 2-3 hours.

No idea what it tastes like from a can, but the Spanish Mackerel we caught in the Keys and fried up was pretty good.

My understanding is that if you want to eat it raw, it should be frozen and held at -4 degrees F for 36 hours to kill any parasites. We didn’t see any parasites in what we caught, but the tails of the Amberjacks we caught had tapeworms.
